| Walk down the streets of Chinatown in Melaka (Malacca) any day and you will see tourists. But the tourists miss many of the interesting aspects of this town. Behind the shop houses are lanes that were used by the night soil carters to service the people of Melaka. Night soil carters no longer call but the lanes remain and are quite alive. Here a father and son play together, there a man shaves. Elsewhere bright gardens contrast the weathered walls. | |
