Becoming a Volunteer

You can make a positive difference for people with a mental illness by becoming one of our keen team of volunteers. Volunteers assist in a variety of areas. We have a policy of supporting and training volunteers and ensuring they are not out of pocket for assisting us.

The following are areas where we are constantly in need of more volunteers:

1. Social activities You could assist members organise social activities, provide transport to community activities, or facilitate social interaction among reserved members. Examples of the sorts of social activities are: BBQ, going to the cinema, car rally, going to restaurants/clubs.

2. Sport There are some members who would like to learn or try a sport. You could help to organise members to get to the venue, coach them, bring the tray of cut oranges, or cheer from the boundary.

3. Workshop/short course presenters You may have an interest that you would like to share with our members. You could give a talk on an interesting topic, or run a short course on a hobby.

4. Cooking A big part of our program is members choosing a meal to cook, then shopping and preparing the meal with everyone sharing the delicious result. You might like to offer support for the members as they follow through each of these steps.

5. Transport There are many members who find it difficult to participate in the program because of difficulties with transport. You might support a person catch public transport until they are confident to make the trip themselves. You might drive members to activities in your vehicle with us reimbursing you.

6. Computer tutoring Some members would love to improve their skills in using computers and the internet. If you have a basic level of skill in these areas and an above average level of patience – this is the job for you.

7. Phone Outreach One of the parts of our program that many members appreciate is receiving a phone call from our program. The members who make these calls appreciate having someone to share the task and to talk to after the calls.

8. Fundraising If you have an interest in fundraising we certainly have the need.

9. Public education We would like to provide more education to the public on mental health issues. If you enjoy public speaking and teaching you might like helping us in this area.
