Undergraduate Degree
The first hurdle is completing an undergraduate degree (Bachelor/Honours). It doesn't matter what the degree is - Engineering, Arts, etc. They say the degree proves you can successfully cope with studying at university level. The different schools have varying requirements regarding performance in your first (or last completed) undergraduate course. Check out the requirements at each by following the university links.
Details regarding Bachelor Degree requirements
are given in the ACER
Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Guide
To assess your undergraduate performance all of the uni's use something called a GPA.
Basically, it is an average calculated from your subject marks on a scale from 0-7,
however, it is calculated in a variety of ways for each of the uni's.
So the best thing is to check the method in the ACER admissions guidebook or from ACER's website
What GPA do you need?
Note: If you don't reach the required minimum you will not get an interview regardless of your GAMSAT score.
If you are in your final year of undergraduate
studies you can take the GAMSAT and apply for admission. If you are successful
you will be granted a conditional offer pending completion of the undergraduate
degree at the required level that year. (Theoretically, since the GAMSAT
is valid for 2 years, you should be able to take the GAMSAT in your penultimate
year for admission 2 years later) There are also some restrictions on up to
how long ago the course had to be completed: you had to have completed your
degree within the last 10 years counting from the year of admission (not from the year when you sat GAMSAT).
This applies to Melbourne, Queensland and Sydney, however a postgraduate course or other academic activity may exempt you from this requirement.
Check out the ACER guide book above, you can also check with the universities directly.
