LaeMi's Computer

Anyone bored-out-of-their-skull-enough to hack past my ADSL modem's NAT/Firewall and then my OS-level firewall and query my system for identity data will find that it is named "LaeMi" after my SecondLife Avatar. They can conclude that I an either a narcist or very unimaginative - either way they would be wrong ;-)

Actually, naming one's root filesystem after oneself can have horrible horrible consequences!

For Example, every few dozen reboots (no, I am not an up-time junkie), I get told...

LaeMi has been mounted 30 times without being checked, check forced.

Which makes me sound like a hooker in need of a medical!

Worse still, if my system crashes*, I will get a startup message like...

LaeMi was not cleanly unmounted check forced.

Which makes me sound like a hooker in need of a medical after a condom failure!!!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! :-P

*Even the Linux kernel has it's limits when forced to deal with poorly written 3rd-party drivers (cough ATI cough).

I am also rather resentful that my HDD seems to be getting more than me :-/

Hardware Configuration

So what is my computer actually configured like?

As you can see, the system is brand new and quite high-specced, though not extreme. I hope to sit on this config for 3-5 years or longer. My next upgrade will actually consist of setting up a small low-energy home server and offloading those tasks from this system which will then become an on-only-as-needed VR workstation.

Next purchase on my wish-list is the physically largest 1920x1080 LCD monitor I can get my hands on for under $750. But I am happy enough with my 17" CRT for now.

LaeMi's next computer

I am making a sci-fi-ish looking computer case out of scrap aluminium. More details here.
