Who and what exactly are The Town Bikes?
Notorious first ladies of crazed adagio, The Town Bikes – Gabi Barton and Carla Yamine – have amused and bemused audiences across the Australia, Europe, the UK and America with their inimitable stylings and high voltage performance. Born from an intense desire to present entertaining and meticulous work, their unique brand of dance based theatrics has catapulted them into venues as diverse as Speigeltents, East German Fishing Ships, Mammoth Music Festivals, Children’s Bonfires, Swingers Parties and a Buddhist Cabaret.

Purveyors of slapstick and curious choreography, The Town Bikes seek inspiration from idiosyncrasy and synchronicity, exploring their difference through a prescribed similarity. Employing an endless assortment of exquisite, matching costumes and incongruous props, The Bikes have spent the better part of six years crafting and presenting countless works.

From humble beginnings as a renegade act, thrust between a staggering array of musical talents on festival stages and live venues, they have evolved into what has become a unique hybrid of dance and performance, equally at home in the grandeur of an old theatre or the immediacy of a street corner.

Green Room Award nominees for Best Cabaret Ensemble, their wilful exuberance has also inspired an array of tributes and collaborations. From Clare Moore’s hit single ‘The Town Bikes Song’ to the extraordinary filmic exploration ‘Meatworks’ by Cassandra Tytler (screened as part of Phillip Brophy’s Descore), the pair have expanded their creative repertoire with an eclectic mix of performers.

In the world of rock, they have both warmed and set stages alight for likes of The 5678s, Andre Williams, Blues Explosion, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Liars, Bob Log 111, Har Mar Superstar, The Black Lips, Louie Austen, B(if)tek, Curse Ov Dialect, The Sailors, Sista She, The Drones, The Streets, Dallas Crane, Six Ft Hick, The Living End, Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, The Spazzys and Architecture in Helsinki to name a few.

Further highlights include appearing as guest artistes for four sell out seasons of Finucane and Smith’s, The Burlesque Hour in Melbourne, Adelaide and Edinburgh Festival, Bob Log 111 US Tour, Independent tours in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, regular national tours and several appearances at The Big Day Out and Meredith Music Festival, guest appearance in La Clique and regular spots at The Famous Spiegeltent
After successfully premiering their first full length work – ‘MILK’ at Melbourne Fringe Festival 2006, The Town Bikes will present their newest full length work, ‘The Meat Show’ at the Famous Spiegeltent, in December 2007. Directed by Moira Finucane, sound design by Kelly Ryall and the assistance of Arts Victoria, it promises to be a magical and maniacal journey.
Replete with their swag of costumes, curious props, vivacious characters and insatiable thirst for sartorial excess, self proclaimed ambassadors of Mutant Cabaret, The Town Bikes go forth on their endless quest for matching jumpsuits and cheap thrills.

'...smart, saucy dance routines.'

The Times (UK)

'....custom costumes, awesome moves and fab samples warmed up the crowd nicely....pure entertainment'

'...comic timing and primary-coloured PVC saucier than your Edinburgh chippy.'

If I ever get a tattoo it will be of the Town Bikes encircling my torso kicking and holding hands.

The Town Bikes make ugly bands look good. When they performed with Har Mar Superstar at the Livid Festival The Town Bikes appeared either side of him like two diamond earrings. Dancing to exotic lounge music before the 5678s, their choreographed manoeuvres with nunchakus were sensual and tough, like getting a spanking from your sexy grade 6 art teacher.

Patrick O'Donovan, The Age

It was also a chance to catch the inventive interpretative styles of dance duo the Town Bikes, easily the best dancing I have ever seen in the Rob Roy and for that matter anywhere for years and with the good taste to take on a rather remarkable Serge Gainsbourg number with their only gimmick some specially designed electric breasts.
David Nichols

You guys are f***ing unreal.
Luke Roberts, Ding Dong Lounge

I worked for a number of years as the publicist for Chunky Move, the state Contemporary Dance Company of Victoria, and have seen my fair share of world-class contemporary dance. But there is something different about The Town Bikes. It's like a relevant fusion of dance, comedy, rock and cabaret - but with a dangerous edge, more raw than naughty, perhaps daring and fresh - all rolled into a few minutes of brilliance.
