What qualities should it have? If you could improve WLIIA? or add something to it to make it even better, what would you do? (In a perfect world, or even this one.) As you are experts, I thought it wise to consult you. Feel very free to let me know. I mean bleeping Ryan beacuse he says right hand (I know its in an ineuendo, looks for Jess), but I just thought that was weird that they would do that. it was at 9:30. Also, I would have more games and different games. According to the ones that went to the tapings there are going to be a few different ones, but that doesn't mean ABC will show them though. Those are the only two I could think of now. The annoying thing to me being that ... I've scraped money together and made it to tapings and they do a little more variety then they show ... but it hasn't made it on eps yet. I'm hoping that like Colin said, they're probably just starting out like this in order to get people into the show, and then will start mixing it up. Hope hope hope. Otherwise ... well, censoring is annoying but ... I dunno. I'm the wrong person to ask. Give me any of my improv shows and hell, as long as they make me giggle (and bounce ... yes Tiggers are wonderful things for all those who have seen me in that mode) ... I'm not really picky. Wednesday, 04-Aug-1999 03:25:01 208.254.224.103 writes: Why, we'd get you back on the show, Jim! :-) OK, that was shameless, but seriously, I have a question. Do you mean how to improve a WL-like show that's watched by the same people weekly, or an improv stage show that has a vastly varied audience? For a WL-esque show, I'd say, a bit more variety, please! Mix up the games a LOT more and use varied suggestions (in games like F&TS), or even varied ways to get suggestions (e.g.: Greatest Hits doesn't always have to be about an occupation). And for WL specifically, I'd say ... lengthen it to an hour, expand the number of shows per season, and bring back a Brit or two! :-) For a live stage show, it gets tricker, since you don't have to worry about pleasing the same audience week after week. (Unless they're Whosers - we always come back for more! :-)) I'd say, keep track of suggestions that are taken, and try to get different ones each week so the performers don't fall into doing the jokes they had previously done with said suggestion. Try to get the audience as involved as possible without making them uncomfortable. And most of all, enjoy what you're doing. If you're not having fun, trust me, neither is the crowd. I hope this helped! And if not ... well, it's an after-midnight ramble. :-) Jules ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Jim M.: Meskimen has an innocent question (04-Aug-1999 02:37:46) Molly, The Complainer ;P: Hi Jim, welcome to the wacky Whoserville. In addition, mix up the contestants a bit more (we LOVE Colin, Ryan, Wayne and Greg, but it would be nice to see other people too). But it's also fun to see people do things they're not so good at). Wednesday, 04-Aug-1999 10:23:19 12.76.124.72 writes: It's always difficult to explain why comedy is funny and what would make it funnier... but I'll have a go at it as well. The first and foremost factor is variety. The current Drew Carey-hosted WLiiA? is quite repetitive. I suppose this is so viewers new to the idea of improvised comedy can feel grounded in the show (after all, on sit-coms, you see the same characters every week), but it doesn't hurt to shake things up a little. This is an ABC-specific example, but Colin and Ryan are paired up much too often. They have never been broken up in Sound Effects, and if I'm not mistaken, they are the only two to EVER be the announcers for Greatest Hits. It is much more enjoyable to see different performers' takes on the way each game is played (as each game has its own feel to it). While I don't go as far as wanting to see Colin do the singing side of Greatest Hits (I'm pretty sure he'd refuse if asked to), I would like to see some other performers call the songs. While it's great that Colin and Ryan have worked together for so many years and can play off each other well, they're professionals, and can also play off of the other performers. In fact, as I recall, when you were on WLiiA?, you were very often paired up with Christopher Smith in the two-player games. Again, I realize that you've worked together and know each other's performing style, but performing with somebody who has a slightly different style than you're used to can provide an entertaining change. Just as the performers need some variety, so does the rotation of games. When we see one particular game every week, we quickly grow tired of it and crave change. However, if the same game only pops up, say, every other week, it usually remains fresh and new, because the same premise isn't being used over and over again. I think this is what killed off Authors. It was a perfectly fine improvisational game that, as a rule, was shown every episode, and thusly began to annoy viewers (and possibly performers) to the point of its extinction. The key to successful improvisation is variety. After all, the entire idea behind improv is that you're going to see a show different from anything that has been seen before. (Oh, and one more note: Make sure that it IS improvisation, not a show where the performers have had a couple weeks to go over ideas and then perform it, fooling the viewer into thinking it's improv. That's been tried, and didn't pan out very well.) I think that Whose Line has gotten into a groove (or maybe a rut) where they have found things (i.e. the Ryan and Colin pairing for just about everything) that they know work, so they figured they'd just stick with them... but it's getting a little tired (I STILL LAUGH! DON'T WORRY!). what else... i personally like it when, on stage, improvisers carry games even farther than the audiences imagine they go... i.e. making even more uses out of props, using more styles during "Film and Theatre Styles," and using even more lengthy games such as "Musical"... taking the game to new levels, where the audience believes "whoa, any minute they're going to run out of ideas and fall on their faces!" -- makes it very exciting, you know? of course, this would be harder with a half hour show the way they have it set up now... but that is what i think is the most exciting thing about improv... when you can just keep going, and going, and going... to establish something and then to carry it to it's fullest extent and follow it through! so there are my thoughts... it's an honor to post to you, kind sir :) take it easy... dana ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Jim M.: Meskimen has an innocent question (04-Aug-1999 02:37:46) Molly, The Complainer ;P: Hi Jim, welcome to the wacky Whoserville. Re: Meskimen has an innocent question Wednesday, 04-Aug-1999 23:36:23 24.129.57.24 writes: Well, you've heard what people bothers people about WL and I agree with what they've said--censorship, lack of variety in games and performers (more women!!). I believe you mentioned you were hoping to develop an improv show of your own for TV, so I'm guessing that's why you want input. One of my suggestions is to let people see you mess up. Since WL is edited down from over 2 hours, they rarely show the screw-ups anymore which doesn't help it's case when people don't believe it's improvised. Besides, I enjoy occasionaly seeing the weaknesses of excellent performers. It makes the show funnier and it makes the viewer appreciate the difficulty of improvisation. Sometimes, you make it look too easy. :-)Now, a casual viewer may not stick around if you show *all* the bits that don't work, but I hope you understand what I mean. There's not much live improv where I live, but I've finally managed to see a variety of troupes. I was facinated by all the types, including the longer improv. I love all the short games they do on WL, but there is so much more out there. I think it would be interesting if you could incorporate longer scenes, like the one-act plays you are currently doing. If it's a 30 minute show, I suppose they would have to be kept brief, but maybe something episodic like the British Masterson Inheritance so that people will "tune in" to find out what happens next. I would even like to see a scene that takes up the whole show every once in a while. Um, I had some other things in mind, but it's late and I've forgotten them. I may add stuff later. Thanks for stopping by. I would love to see you perform so if I'm ever in California long enough, I'll try to see a show. BTW, Mr. "You simply can't expect the bread to cook with out power" Meskimen, I love your Captain Kirk impression. It's excellent. :-) Donna DFW ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Jim M.: Meskimen has an innocent question (04-Aug-1999 02:37:46) Molly, The Complainer ;P: Hi Jim, welcome to the wacky Whoserville.
