An absolutely fantastic surprise e-mail from Christopher Smith! :) Wednesday, 04-Aug-1999 02:55:24 195.92.194.78 writes: Jim passed on my communication to Christopher and I have just received the following e-mail from him, completely out of the blue, but to my unequivocal and sheer delight. I have yet to reply personally, but am about to do so. Dear Matthew Greetings from Los Angeles. To paraphrase a great American radio comedian, Fred Allen, "LA is a great place to live if you're an orange". Mr Meskimen, my esteemed colleague and first wife, passed your message on to me. It was a delight to hear from Whosers, and such devoted ones as well. First of all, I have not auditioned for the Drew's Whose. After Jim's frustrating experience, I opted not to pursue it. I think it is a strange thing that they don't just bring us all back, but I'm afraid that ABC is quite a different animal than Channel 4. Network television in America is huge, huge business and we should all be thankful that they've decided to put improv on at all. (And personally I think Clive is a God. I can hardly watch anyone else sit behind the desk.) Just a quick overview. Jim and I moved out to LA at the same time back in 1993. My wife, Tamara Wilcox-Smith, was the founder, director and a performer with Interplay. Though we closed our school and theatre in New York, she and I continued to teach out here in LA. Among our LA students were Isaac Hayes and the then unknown Jenna Elfman. I turned my talents to writing, and have pretty much devoted myself full time to that career. Sadly, Tamara passed away in the winter of 1998. I am currently in the very early stages of putting together a book of her teaching methods and beliefs. She was a brilliant improv teacher and director. Jim and the rest of the Really Spontaneous Theater Company members all studied with her back in New York. She studied with Del Close, and if you know anything about improv in America I'm sure you know who he is. She performed with a group called The Committee in San Fransisco, and left that to do the film M*A*S*H. She then moved to New York where she started teaching and formed Interplay. BTW, one of the original members of Interplay was Jerry Seinfeld. I am currently working on a couple of screenplays, along with a great project called Politicards 2000 - a deck of playing cards with caricatures of 54 American political figures on them. They're very funny but of course will mean nothing to you. Well, you'll recognise Monica Lewinsky. I should also tell you that I spent my third year of university abroad. (I'll let that too obvious opportunity for a joke slide right on by.) During that year I attended the University of Exeter and stayed in a little town called Topsham. It was one of the most wonderful years of my life though the Old Peculiar has somewhat warped my memory of it all. I did my one man show of Groucho Marx on some Channel 4 show - don't recall the name. I considered living in there after I graduated but when I found out I could get Lion Bars in New York, I moved there. Sorry if this message is a bit of a hodge-podge but I am a bit of a hodge-podge. I look forward to hearing from you and the other Whosers. That sucks that they can't get back on -- but then again, we should be happy that we don't have Jenny McCarthy or Calista Flockhart doing improv :-) While it's not as good as the UK version (though still good!) it could have been worse :-) And Monica Lewinsky gets her 15 minutes of fame extended on Politicards :-) Nick ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Matt, new buddy to the legends: An absolutely fantastic surprise e-mail from Christopher Smith! :) (04-Aug-1999 02:55:24) Nick: Cool e-mail...
