Greg Proops - Review from 'The Scotsman' Monday, 09-Aug-1999 23:36:13 203.56.72.79 writes: Assembly Rooms, until 19 August Tuesday, August 10 1999 Dan Rider Greg Proops * * * The bespectacled American dude famed for his appearances on the heavily-edited and sanitised television improv show Whose Line is it Anyway, returns to the Fringe after a year’s break. And it is a mixture of old and new gags (rants) from Proops. "Old" because savage US comedians Denis Leary, Bill Hicks et al were firing off much of this polemical, full-on diatribe stuff years ago and with infinite superiority. Still, in with the new. Proops duly dishes up a relentless volley of expletive-laden, global culture-bashing amid the staple fare of "Yank in Scottishland" observation. There’s the odd hint of surrealism, some political machinations, Jesus and Satan get a classy once-over, some religious/paganistic probings, some pro-drug musings and a cliché-laden workout for his home, California ("it’s so shallow"). All right, it was his first show and some of the material proved rather hit or miss, and – depending on sensibilities – possibly borderline offensive, but amid the duds, Proops scoops in some inspired gems along the way. Easy listening it ain’t, but this is still a quality hour of potent verbiage.
