"Well, if it isn't the cheeky old face of Greg Proops, seen here 'sharing a joke' with me at the new Assembly Rooms bar. "I'm lovin' it here," he said, "although apparently I'm losing my vitriolic edge. I read that somewhere. The Scots here just love a bitch, and I don't think I'm sarcastic enough any more... but I'll change...!" You can be sure that he will... Yet another article found on the fringe..featuring Jim Sweeney and Steve Steen Tuesday, 17-Aug-1999 17:09:18 129.100.57.127 writes: I seem to just have luck finding articles. You can read this one here or go here "Gilded Balloon Sunday, July 18 1999 In Danny’s Wake, Jim Sweeney has written a gem of a play which deserves to become a comic classic. Sweeney plays Patrick, a teacher who has returned to his home town after 25 years away to attend the wake of his school-friend, Danny. Billy (Steve Steen) the other survivor of "The Three Musketeers", is cheerfully in charge of the body. Strangers after so many years, the two keep vigil over the corpse with the aid of a lot of vodka and a couple of Hawaiian pizzas with extra pineapple. As the drink gets the better of Patrick, and Billy has reeled off the last name in the class of ’72 , events take a surreal turn and they find themselves reverting to the old patterns of youth. Gently, but hilariously, they finally lay to rest the ghosts of their shared childhood and learn that although life is not a joke, it can certainly sound funny. The duo’s 25 years in stand-up and improvised comedy are reflected in a beautifully crafted script. From the aphrodisiac qualities of Labour’s last election victory to anxieties about approaching the dead ("Just pretend you’re Quincy"), Sweeney deftly observes the awkwardness and banality of life, and death. The dialogue is absolutely authentic and sometimes frighteningly recognisable. We have all had conversations like this, but Sweeney and Steen’s are much, much funnier. The performances are so finely judged that the delicacy of mood can be broken, like an eggshell, by the pithiest of one-liners and then transformed back into outright hilarity in seconds. There is a wealth of light and shade in this piece and it has an underlying pathos which surfaces intermittently to remind us what life and time have done to these men. It is always a comedy, but the ending, especially, is very poignant indeed. Steen is completely at home in the broader comic role, but Sweeney proves himself to be a highly gifted actor and gives a wonderfully subtle, understated performance as the repressed, conformist Patrick. Their substantial experience of improvisation shows during the fantasy pub sequence and it is a testament to their talent that such a potentially bizarre scene is just as absorbing as the rest. The simple truth is that this is a quietly brilliant little show and if you have any memories at all of Clodagh Rodgers, Vesta chicken curry or the Rubettes, you will be thoroughly entertained. If they mean nothing to you, I guarantee you will be too busy laughing to worry about it. I came out with the happy realisation that I had been grinning and cackling like a madwoman for a whole hour. Go and see Danny’s Wake today. Or tomorrow. Just make sure you do." I also found a pic.
