Another hot topic for discussion? Thursday, 19-Aug-1999 09:52:43 195.92.194.80 writes: This follows on from what I said further down as part of my essayish, long-winded and rather tedious responses to Mark's post. Does Ryan find other performers funny? I have always felt that Ryan doesn't enjoy working with Steve. I see no chemistry between them, despite Steve's best efforts. Steve has his limits, sure, but only Ryan seems to expose those limits, intentionally or not, whereas the others seem to put it down to the genuine difficulty of improv and move on. So I wonder whether Ryan takes it all a little bit too seriously sometimes. I back this up with evidence of Ryan's reactions whenever he is in his chair watching others perform. Many performers are happy to show their appreciation of someone else's brilliant skills when they are personally not involved, but with Ryan I only find random, isolated cases. He cracked up completely when Colin did his "making as many faces as possible" credit reading, and spluttered when Greg sang his magnificent Plastic Surgeon song, also letting loose that chortle. The only time, however, I recall him laughing at something Steve did was during the Scene To Music with Tony during the "washing powder" skit when Steve went into melodrama and said: "I know not! For surely I am a humble man!" And with Tony, I can only recall Ryan laughing out loud when Tony sang his Psychiatrist song about being in love with himself. Ryan has performed with Steve and Tony many times, but what does it take from them to make him laugh? Onstage, Ryan laughs even less. He giggled at Greg's TV evangelist - "it is truly a mi-ra-cle!" but otherwise I can't recall any others right now. His professional standards may come into this, I understand that, and elaborate a little more on it in the next paragraph. Most of the other performers are quite prepared to show physical appreciation of someone else's prowess. Colin does this regularly, as does Tony and Steve, even when they are not involved in games. Recall if you will, the reaction when Caroline uttered her immortal double-entendre "don't worry, I'm doing my own." The audience were in stitches, Steve walked off stage, Clive giggled his disbelief and Colin held his head in his hands as a mirth-stifler. But Ryan was steadfast in his reaction, with nothing more than a watery smile. Some contestants are clearly easier to please than others, and I'm not suggesting that Ryan is being arrogant in any way. I know he loves working with Colin - the evidence is plain for all to see - but it seems so difficult to make Ryan crack up, even when he is sitting in his chair. Clearly if he is performing in a game he uses his professional standards to not react to something funny in any way other than one which continues the improv. But I think he could snap out of it a bit more when he sits in his chair and watches others take centre stage. Comedians are notoriously difficult to amuse, which is natural, as someone who uses laughter as their business will always make comparisons with themselves and decide whether something is funny or not by whether they would use it had they thought of it first. But improv doesn't have to be intense, a mistake which John Sessions regularly made, and a good example of that can be seen in Paul Merton's performances, who went for the lowest common denominator on many occasions with simple and somewhat obvious gags, but had the talent, delivery and respect of the other contestants to still make them roll in the aisles. Tony cracks up easily, admittedly, but some of his most forceful laughter came when working with Paul. For all his intensity and pomposity, John was often seen in hysterics at Paul's performances even though it wasn't his sort of humour, which shows the prowess of Paul and gives great credit to John. Ryan is a hugely funny man and is by far my favourite of the American contestants. But I think part of improv's standards is to show willing to the other participants as well as to do your own work to the best of your ability. Ryan has the second in abundance, but the first, I feel, he needs to work on. I just don't believe that improv performers have to take themselves so seriously. John didn't, as his reactions when in his chair proved, even though he had the uppercrust, dominating image which has dogged him ever since from his time when he was performing in the early series. It's one thing being able to make an audience laugh, but another being able to make your comedy peers laugh. Maybe Ryan genuinely struggles to appreciate others at work, which is fair enough, but the likes of Colin and Greg and other highly-skilled competitors are never afraid to let their guard down and chuckle when something amuses them, whether off-stage or on. I'm probably talking absolute crap here, but it's a theory which has been swimming around for some time in my nicotine-damaged head and Mark's post has finally forced it to emerge and get dried and dressed. The thing is, will it make it out of the changing room? Matt ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Matt: Another hot topic for discussion? On stage ... dead bodies. Watch Ryan in dead bodies. A game with Karen, and Colin takes a moment to just play with his bottom lip, Ryan loses it. Also, my favourite dead bodies (Greg, Ryan and Rory) Colin bringing Ryan & Greg's faces closer together with long drawn out lines ... and both of them cannot stop shaking with laughter. I love that. For off stage ... watch the US version's Nuroshi song by Brad. Once Brad hits the word "brioshi (sp?)" Ryan is literally leaning over in his chair rubbing his eyes and laughing completely. And the laugh when he throws his head to the side in response to Brad's yelled "WHY?" is another one. For other off stage ... okay, so I'm biased ... I'm drawn to the moment that Drew made the hair crack about Colin and Colin looks pitifully into the camera ... Ryan looks at the "aww" contingent *cough*us?dothat?*cough* and laughs at it before tucking Colin's hair behind his ear to help him in his pitiful look. So he can laugh quite well he can *L* but as Sam said ... being trained not to is a powerful start. Ryan is incredibly funny - the other folks on the show are incredibly funny. Ryan likes the others. The others like Ryan (with a few exceptions on both parts I'm sure - they are human). Ryan is an amazingly kind human being. He laughs a lot - I've been to 22 tapings, I know. Not commenting on the fact that not laughing during your scene is a GOOD thing, here's something to think about: they tape for over 3 hours at a time - Ryan's tired and has to pee. You're less concerned about laughing and more concerned about making things go well so it will end. I mean, heck, even *I* kinda stopped laughing at some things and I was in the audience and I love the show. I mean, I didn't have to do anything but clap and I was too exhausted to laugh. Wayne even commented on that after the taping was over..I believe Brooke claimed I was practicing tantric laughter - I was just TIRED. So, I can imagine how exhausted they must be. Ryan is a terrific person (he's the one who voluntarily got us that stage cast photo - he didn't have to do that) - cut him some slack:) Hehe, I also haven't read any other posts, so I may be beating a dead horse..but there ya go. More on the laughter bit Thursday, 19-Aug-1999 23:37:13 24.129.57.211 writes: Yes, we have discussed this before and the first time this came up, I posted something extrememly long-winded in defense of Ryan (me? long-winded? never!) Here's some of the things I said before and some of the things I've learned since I made it to a few tapings. And I think I'm wandering O/T a little bit , too :-) First, Ryan became a lot looser on camera after 1995 or so. I noticed a big difference because CC stopped at the '95 eps so I watched them many a time before I got to see the '96 eps at the first con (bless those Canadians). Ryan rarely even smiled on stage in the early days and sometimes it looks like he's not even paying attention to what the others are saying in games like LMAD...like he was too busy preparing himself/getting in character for his turn. That never bothered me since I put that down to his sense of professionalism and now that I know about the Second City training I understand that better. I wondered why he looked distracted or like he was trying to supress his smiles sometimes. In the beginning, it seemed like Colin was the only one who could make him consistently crack up (notice many of the examples are about Colin). He was always very serious during the show. That changed a great deal in the last few British seasons and now he's often downright playful on and off the camera. BTW, another example of him laughing at Tony (both he and Greg nearly fell out of their seats) was during the Bartender when Tony was in love with an inflatable pig. Don't make me quote lyrics--I was sort of laughing and groaning at the same time through that song. :-) Even Mike was shaking his head. What I've learned from the tapings is that they are often laughing off to the sides when the camera isn't on them. Maybe Ryan laughed a lot more than was shown. He certainly does now. Actually, the American version is getting better than the British one for showing reaction shots of the players who aren't performing. Ryan laughs quite a bit at everyone else. But sometimes, I bet the shots they get of the players grinning in their chairs don't even match the moment. Can we say pickups? If you can't see the person playing the game in the foreground, who says the people in the background are reacting to that moment and not another one? I'm not saying that all the reactions are edited in from other places, but I think it happens sometimes, especially in games like WW or Scenes from a Hat. They do so many and some are really bad or "dirty" or bizarre so the performers all crack up. If you see a reaction that seems too big for the gag, it may be either an inside joke among the performers or they are laughing at something that didn't make it in the show. Anyway, my point here is that Ryan laughs a lot more than is ever shown on camera. And he does seem to get really cranky towards the end of tapings, when they are doing the opening and transitional pickups. So when he's tired, has to pee, and is least likely to look "perky," they film many of the shots you see towards the beginning of the show. (Notice that I'm not the only one to mention that Ryan has to pee? The man drinks way too much water or has a really small bladder, lol That's something that's been really consistent at all the tapings I've been to. Ever notice how often Ryan is bouncing one leg in many shots? I don't think it's nervous energy. I think nature is calling him...loudly). Sorry about that little digression there. :-)Before you talk about difficult performers again, Ryan makes the most effort to keep the crowd entertained during those long, hot, boring pickups when all we want to do is *leave*. Something else I've learned from meeting Ryan (only one *good* time) is that he is much more reserved and less at ease with the fans than the others. He's still very kind and will pose for photos, sign autographs, and joke around a little. However, he's less likely than the others to hang out and talk to the fans for any length of time. Make of all that what you will, but I don't think we should overanalyze or judge the guy. He's only human and we really don't know him at all, do we? Ryan probably laughs a heck of a lot - cameras on him or not, they might just not show that on the telly. He does laugh during games - maybe not as much, but he does laugh. It probably seems like he laughs a lot at Colin, but that might be because they've known each other a lot longer than the other guys, so things each other says will easily crack the other one up, because they've known each other so long that it just comes naturally. I mean, I've known my friend Emma(TM) :) sice I was born (that was 16 years ago, by the way ladies and gentlemen), and sometimes just looking at her cracks me up. Just an example. And besides, when you're trying to concentrate on how to, say, act out your quirk, then if you suddenly cracked up so much that you lost your train of thought, what happens if you're next in the hoedown line? You've totally forgotten what you were going to sing, and now you've got to think of something else, VERY QUICKLY! I certainly could not do that. But I am not saying that Ryan is incompetent. He is an excellent improvisor, and I am just saying that it is hard to concentrate on 2 things at once. I should know that, cause I found out very quickly that it is very difficult to study AND watch T.V at the same time. Just my 20 cents...(that's about 10 cents American) Jenna ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Matt: Another hot topic for discussion? I know they cut out a lot of stuff and I bet he's laughed his you know what off at a few things. I never noticed him not connecting with Steve Frost though. Maybe I should check my tape again. Ryan seems to be very comfortable in what he's been doing. Okay that's my tired opinion. Now I'm going to bed. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Molly ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Matt: Another hot topic for discussion?
