Ever wanted to interview a Whose Line performer? (aka Ask Jim Meskimen) Saturday, 21-Aug-1999 23:09:58 24.129.57.227 writes: Jim Meskimen e-mailed me(I guess because I'm a board admin.) and offered to do an interview about Whose Line if there was enough interest from all of you. I asked him if he was willing to answer general improv questions, too, since he is a professional and I know some of you are really interested in performing. I think some of you have already e-mailed him and found him quite willing to talk to you. Here's a chance for all the lazy people to join in. ;-) So, here's a former Whose Line performer/current long-form improviser/actor who's willing to answer some questions. Do you want to know what went on at the audition? What Clive Dan/Josie, etc. are really like? What *he* would like to see on WL (since he asked us that question)? What the group he currently performs with does? How to get started in improv? Anything else about the art of improvisation? Post your questions under this thread or e-mail me at donna@mediaone.net. I'll collect the questions, send them to him, and post the replies. My arbitrary deadline is 2 weeks. I'll post a few reminders before the time is up. Ask away and thanks for participating! And one more, what kind of advice would he give someone who is just starting out and may what to get into the business? He loves to smile and laugh, and is in all ways very cuddly, overall, or at least in the parts you can touch without arousing suspicion. Josie Lawrence was quite pleasant to work with, enjoyed all the peculiarities of visiting New York, I remember her noting the odd pornographic TV channel "J" that one picks up on cable in Manhattan, and I was embarassed for our city. It was like having someone mention your imbecilic younger brother and judging you by relationship. She likes to sing and that is a rarity, especially for female improvisors, and I respect her very much for that. I respect anybody who can perform and not be self-critical; they have leapt over a major wall there and deserve respect. Unless, of course, they don't allow anyone else to follow them over the wall too. I've met a few like that, thankfully very few. I'm finding that my WLIIA stats are more valuable now that the show is a mainstream american program than when they first aired. Somebody on the set of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" today asked me excitedly if I was ever on the show. It's nice to see that it has some cache, and I hope I can figure out some way to continue to put out good improv to a big mainstream audience ala Drew's Line. I have a lot of advice for new performers, too much to go over here (I do actually sell a short booklet of more detailed advice, email me if you are interested) but the main thing is: if you wish to be a performer, PERFORM. do plays, live shows, parties, classes, tape recordings, hog-calls, drag races... whatever. An actor acts. Be one, and the rest will eventually fall into place. Very best wishes, Jim Meskimen Jim Meskimen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: DFW: Ever wanted to interview a Whose Line performer?
