[Image] [Image] Whose Board is it, Anyway? Happy Families Wednesday, 14-Jul-1999 01:29:56 130.194.1.7 writes: I taped this last time it was on UKTV, unfortunately lost the last episode (I'll have to watch out for it this time... this week's episode should be repeated on the weekend). It's another show from the Comic Strip Gang (UKTV shows Young Ones, then Happy Families, Filthy Rich & Catflap, and Bottom). The story goes roughly as follows: An old woman (Jennifer Saunders) is feeling ill and so calls in a doctor (Stephen Fry, assistant played by Hugh Laurie). In between the advances of Cook (Dawn French), he tells the woman that she is dying, and she should gather her family around her. She has a son (Adrian Edmonson) who is fancied by Cook's assistant, Flossie (Helen Lederer), however, the woman doesn't much care for him and only wants to see her four daughters again (all played by Saunders). So she sends her son out to find them all and bring them home. One of the big jokes in this first episode involves the son's panic about his car getting wet - the woman's husband has died and his body is in the way of the garage door, however she won't allow it to be moved and so the son can't put his car under cover. He eventually gets his car into the garage, but the woman has planted explosives and moments later the garage blows up! :) The next four episodes are each about finding one of the daughters - the son sends back updates on audio cassette each time, and the old woman sometimes sends him cups of tea :) The basic idea is that each time, the daughter's are entirely happy where they are, but the son manages to completely ruin their lives so that they can go home. The first daughter is a Hollywood star, appearing in a soap opera, which involves incredibly large wigs being lowered onto her head with ropes, and cast members being written out as soon as the actors become a little problematic. I think the guest stars here include John Sessions as a co-star, Chris Barrie as a make-up artist(?), Christopher Ryan as the director, and possibly Ruby Wax too (as a reporter or a co-star or something...). The daughter doesn't want to leave, but after being written out, agrees to return home. The second daughter is in France, living with a Frenchman who is taking care of a number of young girls (with not entirely good motives...). The daughter, however, trusts the man and so won't be convinced to return home. A number of plots are going on in the village (someone attempts to set up a trap using piano wire to decapitate a horserider, except that they stupidly use a whole piano instead...) and when the true motives of the guy are found out, he and the girls are sentenced to be burnt at the stake, and the son manages to rescue the daughter and convince her to return home. Guest stars in this episode include a number of people in the pub (some policemen? including, I think, Rik Mayall, Steve Frost and Nigel Planer) and some villagers (including Hale & Pace). The third daughter is in a convent, where her off key singing and boundless enthusiasm have made her an (oblivious) target for the hatred of the other nuns. The son tries various plans to get her to come home, including impersonating an archbishop, and eventually succeeds when he pretends to be the angel Gabriel. Guest stars are scarcer this episode (or at least, less recognisable) - perhaps the nuns include Helen Atkinson Wood or Harriet Thorpe... and there's a policeman (Arthur Smith?). The fourth daughter is the hardest to get home, because she's in prison. The prison is run by a rather tough head (), and is currently the subject of a documentary by a reporter (Chris Langham). He interviews various people including guard Joyce Nightstick (Sandi Toksvig). The son manages to rent a room near the prison, and to get in and see his sister. He hatches an incredibly unlikely plan to sneak his sister out of the prison in a cardboard box, which somehow actually works - however, meanwhile the prison has been put under the control of a new governor (Ben Elton) whose 'friendly' policies include leaving all cells and gates open! In the final episode, all the daughters arrive home to be with their mother. It is then revealed that there is something more sinister going on - (unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately!, having lost the episode I can't remember exactly what!). It is something along the lines of the doctor and the woman having found a cure for the disease, but for which they will need body parts from the daughters or something like that. It all works out okay in the end, Flossie may even get to be with the son :) although Cook doesn't come out of it so well... I'm trying to figure out who Steve Steen played... I have him listed as a 'doctor' so he could be in the first or last episodes (or briefly in any of them, really). Or perhaps in the hospital that the nun daughter attempts to cheer up with her singing. I can't remember Lenny Henry at the moment either. Anyway, Happy Families is somewhat weird compared to the other series this group have done. Young Ones was probably the ultimate, Filthy Rich & Catflap was trying to get back towards that but with less success (Nigel Planer's character was completely wrong in that). Bottom was the nearest they've got to Young Ones since, although a bit more emphasis on the crude, sexual and slapstick humour instead of the weird and/or clever stuff. But Happy Families is a very laid back series, subtle jokes and just strange situations and characters more than actual funny lines and scenes. Like all their series, perhaps even more so in this, some of the greatest fun can be found in spotting the huge number of recognisable faces involved. Ah well, I think that's gone on long enough already :) Mark ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Michelle: The Young Ones, French & Saunders, Fry & Laurie and a whole bunch of Whose Line contestants make 'Happy Families'...... I recently got into this show after seeing some eps on BBC America. Rik and Ade have this chemistry that I haven't seen in a long time. But after I heard about Rik's accident I cringe everytime I see him getting hit in the head. I know this show was made before his accident, but I still think, "Oh no, RIK!!" when he gets hurt. Hehehehe, I wonder how Ade liking being Jennifer's son? Hmm, what would that make him, since he's married to her in real life. :) I was surprised when I found out that Ade and Jennifer were married, I have no idea why. They seem to be a very perfect couple. Okay I'll shut up now, but anytime someone mentions Rik, Ade, Christopher, Jennifer or Dawn I go nuts. [Image] [Image] Whose Board is it, Anyway? A little more info... Wednesday, 14-Jul-1999 02:41:52 195.92.194.72 writes: "Happy Families" was made in 1985 and was an exceptional success here in the UK. It allowed a mainstream audience (it was BBC1 prime time) to see the Comic Strip crew in action rather than late night BBC2 or Channel 4 cult audiences and was partly responsible for the slow-but-sure advent of "respectable" work in dramas, plays etc. for the alternative comics and performers who appeared. It was brilliantly scripted by Ben Elton and impeccably acted, with Jennifer Saunders outstanding as the Fuddle family (Granny Fuddle, plus daughters Cassie, Madeleine, Joyce and Roxanne). Adrian Edmondson played Guy Fuddle, the brother who, as Mark said, was the youngest of the siblings who were abandoned by their mother and left with their ageing, slightly senile granny who really didn't care about them. She resented them because her husband (whose body was STILL in the garage) loved them so much he no longer had time for her, so she sent them all away. Mark has described the storylines impeccably. The last episode revolves around the arrival of the four daughters back to the Fuddlewich mansion where they were brought up to see their Granny after Guy had tracked them down. Granny Fuddle's supposed reason for their necessary return was because she wanted to see them before she died, but actually, as Mark said, she wanted them to each donate organs, under the reluctant advice of Dr de Quincy (Stephen Fry), for transplantation which would save her from the disease which she had, called Corrington's Syndrome (a made-up condition, I suspect). Granny Fuddle offers them a share of her estate and fortune in return for their bodily parts, which they duly sign up for. Only then does the final twist in the tale emerge... de Quincy was also doctor for Cook (Dawn French) and he was due to tell her that her urine sample confirmed her pregnancy. Suddenly, Flossie the maid (Helen Lederer) bursts in, with the news that Cook had taken a turn for the worse. de Quincy says it's because she's pregnant - only she isn't, she has in fact turned bright blue and died - a known symptom of Corrington's Syndrome... de Quincy had mixed up the two samples and it turns out Granny Fuddle isn't dying, but merely pregnant in her late 70s. At which point she goes into labour, gives birth - and the daughters disappear with all her money, as she had signed that contract to give it all away. I can't recall Steve Steen in any episode, however I know Lenny Henry played a streetwise American fellow during the episode in which Guy goes to find Cassie in Hollywood. Hope this is a help. I can THOROUGHLY recommend "Happy Families".
