More on U.S HIGNFY and Drew Carey Show Live..... Wednesday, 28-Jul-1999 22:58:19 203.22.236.33 writes: From Ultimate TV: Norm Macdonald, star of ABC's "Norm," may be following in the footsteps of fellow Alphabet net star Drew Carey and finding himself a second job. Macdonald is rumored to be the host for a new quiz show for the net, tentatively called "Have I Got News For You." While ABC execs won't confirm or deny the rumor, the show would be a current events quiz and the pilot would film in September. The official announcement may come during ABC's Press Tour on Wednesday. Macdonald wouldn't be the first ABC star to do double duty. Carey stars in both "The Drew Carey Show" and hosts "Whose Line is It Anyway?" and Regis Philbin, host of "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee" is hosting "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" this summer on the net. This November, "The Drew Carey Show" will try something innovative and unusual in the world of primetime TV by producing a live, partially unscripted storyline, in which the cast will play improvisational games. The show will be performed three times, once for each time zone (Eastern/Central, Mountain and Pacific). "It's live, there's gonna be improv, anything can happen," said executive producer Bruce Helford. "I just hope they don't tap the keg until after the third show." Now entering its fifth season, the series frequently features innovative show elements, which have included elaborate dance numbers, April Fool's contests, a guest-starring appearance by Daffy Duck and an episode filmed in mainland China. "The Drew Carey Show" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: More on U.S HIGNFY and Drew Carey Show Live..... [Inside The Web] [Image] [Get FREE Message Board] [Image] Whose Board is it, Anyway? BIG news about the Drew Carey Show Live!!!! Thursday, 29-Jul-1999 08:29:12 142.140.196.64 writes: Well, we asked and we shall receive (well, partially ...) ... read on, I bolded the special part :) The anything-goes cast of The Drew Carey Show will assay a dangerous-sounding stunt this November, airing without a net--or a script--not once, but three times in one night. About one-third of the half-hour ABC sitcom will be unscripted--and completely improvised. The actors will perform their off-the-cuff stuff back-to-back-to-back to provide three different time zones (Eastern/Central, Mountain and Pacific) with fresh improvised material. "It's live, there's going to be improv, anything can happen," says executive producer Bruce Helford The live trick isn't exactly new--three years ago, NBC's ER performed its season premiere live twice for two different time zones. But the added element of improv means that The Drew Carey Show, produced by Warner Bros., will really be flying by the seat of its pants...if it keeps them on. "The idea came about because we like to push the envelope. A live show seemed interesting, but I felt that when ER did their show live it was well done, but perhaps too well done, actually too perfect," says Helford. "We felt it would be really great if the live included the really unexpected. This will be truly, truly live with the cast put on the spot." Drew Carey and costar Ryan Stiles (Lewis) have shown off their improv chops on Carey's other half-hour on ABC, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, but Helford admits that some others in the cast are "not the most gifted at improv...but they are all game to have fun and go for it." Adding to the mix will be Whose Line improv whizzes Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie, who will be written in to the plotline of the live Drew show, which will air early in November sweeps. "A scene will be going along as scripted and a character will suddenly step up to ask for another choice, a new joke or perhaps demand that everyone now play the scene as English cowboys," says Helford. Still, he adds, "One of the hardest things for the cast is that the improv can't go on too long because there is the storyline that has to be returned to. "I just hope they don't tap the keg until after the third show." In other ABC news this week, programming executives say they have plans to meet with NAACP representatives but insist they have already made moves to explore hiring more minorities both on- and off-camera. So far a Latina has been added to the supporting cast of Sabrina. Two new dramas--Wasteland, about twentysomething New Yorkers, created by Dawson's Creek's Kevin Williamson, and Once and Again, an exploration of a relationship between single parents, created by thirtysomething's Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick--have reworked their plot lines to incorporate minorities not in the pilot episodes. Jamie Tarses, president of ABC Entertainment, says there had been "an ongoing suggestion" to all producers to rethink casting, but denied specific shows were targeted for fuller ethnic integration. "We didn't specifically identify the shows. We identified the concern in general, and that the effort needed to be made." *** Well, lets guess ... Eugene is back and this time speaking a bit more? ;) ... and what about Wayne??
