The first, like frogs and turtles, produce many offspring and simply hope that some will survive. The second, like elephants and people, produce one, or two at a long interval, and make great efforts to rear them. My mother belonged in a class of her own. She produced two at a short interval and made no effoprt to rear them whatsoever. Thus Dorothy finds herself making her own way in Sassaspaneck, New York, in 1968. Her English father, who never talks above a whisper owing to an early injury with a cricket ball, has tucked her and her mother away where their potential for embarrassing him can be limited. All the other children in town have gone to camp, so Dorothy must provide her own entertainment, which she does when she discovers a small, faded zoo on the edge of town. Dorothy wants to find out where she belongs. The Chinese, she knows, had a strict order for everything, particularly the animal world, which could be classified in a variety of ways including 'Those Belonging to the Emperor' and 'Drawn with a Very Fine Camel-Hair Brush'. But the worst category without a doubt was 'Et cetera'. Dorothy badly does not want to be an et cetera. But as she gradually gets to know the somewhat eccentric group of women who live at the zoo, and the rest of the townsfolk, Dorothy begins do discover a world beyond the one that she has glimpsed so far.
