Discussion of episode 202 (tonight's) Thursday, 21-Oct-1999 21:26:57 141.209.159.207 writes: First of all, has anyone else noticed that Ron West is a program consultant on this show? Huh. Anyway, the review: Let's Make a Date: I give it a 3.5 out of 5. A good effort was made by all. Superheroes: I give it a 3.5 out of 5. A good effort was made by all. Ballad of...: I understand that nobody is perfect, but seeing Wayne flounder about in the song didn't sit right with me. Considering we're talking about a lawyer, an occupation ripe with jokes, why such a simple song? Better yet, why was it aired? Why not cut it and wait for a better lawyer song (lawyer will come up as subject again, I'm sure). Oh, wait, we'll probably see another lawyer song in the future anyway. If You Know What I Mean: Ryan was the only one scoring in this game. It also was uncomfortable watching Brad and Colin try to come up with pretend euphemisms. A concept that should never have made it to air. (Was the game played this way because they couldn't use direct euphemisms? I mean, an auto race! Pistons thrusting back and forth, shifting into first, taking a pit stop, pushing the pedal, all the gasoline gags... why pretend euphemisms? Especially with the next game...) Greatest Hits: The vaudeville act was good. The beach song was okay, I guess. The lounge hit, for no other reason than the direct euphemism ("ripped my bag and my balls fell out") stole the show. I'm surprised ABC didn't cut it, but am glad, too. 90-Second Alphabet: Surprisingly okay for Alphabet. Unfortunately, the time limit just causes the performers to rush at the end and not be as funny. The end is where the scene needs to be the funniest. Credits: It's the first time a non-reading performer didn't get out of his seat! Yay! This reading was well-suited to a list of names, and I wonder if over time Easter Xua will become the Mykola Pawluk of DLiiA?. Overall: First, I want to know if there really is a prissyboy@aol.com , and if so, how does he/she feel about this. If there is a prissyboy@aol.com , I wonder why ABC didn't cut that part. Or maybe ABC grabbed the vacant address to avoid a potential lawsuit. I know this has nothing to do with my overall review of the episode, but I've got to know. Overall review: Slightly below average episode. Let's Make a Date: Didn't enjoy it as much as I usually enjoy that game...basically b/c Ryan didn't get a very good one, IMO :-( Rating: 3 (of 5) Superheroes: Since I couldn't get over Prissy Boy and the Dirty Dancing guy, I loved this one, although incredibly silly ;-) Rating: 4.2 (of 5) Ballad of...: I enjoyed it, myself. Not saying it couldn't have been better, but it could've been much worse, too! Rating: 3.5 If You Know What I Mean: Didn't care for this game, although I was pleased to see a new one...however I really didn't like the game. Rating: 2.5 Greatest Hits: The 1st and 3rd songs were a scream. I thought I was going to die during the vaudeville act...the beach song was okay but a bit boring...I thought the lounge one was going to be too until they started singing, "Ripped my bag and my balls fell out..." I was ROFL. Rating: 4.9 90-Second Alphabet: I've always loved this game, and today was no exception. I was especially LOL when Drew skipped "V" although I dind't realize it until the audience started yelling. I loved Colin's line: "He's a dumb ass, isn't he?" (or something like that) Rating: 4.3 Credits: I don't like this at all...I don't find it very funny. Rating: 2.8 (only b/c it was a bit better than the other ones they've had) Overall: I thought it was a pretty good ep...of course I always think DL is great ;-) And no, there is no PrissyBoy@aol.com ...at least, I don't think so...I looked it up on my AOL IM and they couldn't find a match, and don't all AOL users have an instant messanger? So I'm guessing there isn't one (luckily for him/her ;-). Overall rating: 4 (of 5) Well, actually if you average all my scores you get about a 3.7, but anyway... :-) Jennifer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Scott R.: Discussion of episode 202 (tonight's) (21-Oct-1999 21:26:57) Monika: I loved Brad's monster truck announcer! Maybe it's just me, but it's been a lot of guys recently up on that stool, in a row. I'm not saying that guys shouldn't be sung to.... but lately, it's only guys. I admit that I too laughed at "choking the nun" and "a layover in Winnepeg." But "a nice pair of produce shelves" and "Gilligan building a coconut house" didn't meet the same level of hilarity that Ryan was creating, making the game difficult to watch, let alone perform. Come to think of it, a lot of this episode was watching the performers struggle in a non-humorous way. The end of Superheroes, Ballad of..., If You Know What I Mean, the second song in Greatest Hits, and 90-Second Alphabet all showed the performers at their low points. Why air those games? Was the rest of the taping even worse? Or are we just trying to squeeze more episodes out of one taping? Oh well. My screen was fuzzy the entire time, I don't understand how a cable company can have such bad reception of a national channel. Moving on... Note that I was in desperate need of comedy last night, so EVERYTHING looked funny. On a rating out of 9... LMAD: Brad was hilarious! I really liked it. In a more happy frame of mind, though, I think I would have given it a 7.8. Superheroes: Hasn't bad hair day already been done on DL? Whatever. Again, it was great. I especially liked Prissy Boy and Captain Frisks-a-lot. Even in a more sane state, I would give it a 8.2. Ballad of...: I didn't really like this one. I just...I don't know, maybe I have anti-country music feelings, especially when it wasn't all that funny. I'd rate it about 4.6. If You Know What I Mean: I liked this one a lot. Maybe it's just my juvenile sense of humor, but what the heck, I was laughing like a loon. It's nice to see a new game, too. 8.8. Greatest Hits: I ran out to get a drink during the beach song, but the other two were amusing. My sister was laughing so hard during the lounge song, she fell off my bed(which is raised about 4 feet off the floor). Luckily, she escaped injury, but my stuffed monkey doll will never be the same. 8.5 90-Second Alphabet:R, S, T, U, W...Drew doesn't know the alphabet too well. I loved "X-Files! We're missing X-Files!" The time limit kinda restrains it, though. All in all, pretty good! 7.3 Credits: Honestly, does anyone else think that Ryan needs to chill on the Drew jokes for a while? However, that "Gepetto 2" was funny. Credits isn't really my fave event, but this was a really good one! 7.5 All in all, it was a good episode! I think it's lost a little of it's previous..fire I guess... but it was a great pick me up! Average grade: 7.52. Re: Discussion of episode 202 (tonight's) Friday, 22-Oct-1999 09:49:33 209.6.114.174 writes: Here's my take on the ep. Yes, of *course* I am biased when Brad is on, so you might be surprised when I say that I didn't like this ep as much as the last one Brad was on, or even as much as other eps I've watched this season (or in past seasons). However, it certainly had its moments...so here we go...and I am not going to give the games ratings, just some musings, as I do on my X-Files listserves (more on that shortly!): Let's Make A Date: I LOVED BRAD (Of course!, but he *was* funny as Monster!Truck Man), and I liked Ryan as King Kong. I didn't think Colin had a very good character to work with, and do you get the feeling that Wayne is getting sick of having to be the contestant every week? I think the guest should be once in a while. Brad is really funny when he plays it, and so is Greg and Denny, amongst others. Super Heroes: Pretty fun. I liked Brad as Prissy!Boy (@aol.com), but they didn't do much w/ the bad hair day theme, did they? And it was a pretty weak theme that they have already dealt with, anyway. Aren't there other suggestions they could have taken? I thought Colin was funniest in this structure. He didn't exactly play a *boy*, but he got all the 'tude right. Comment: Why was Brad dancing all over the stage all night? He was doing a Greg, I thought! Ballad of...Pretty funny. Leonard looked suitably uncomfortable (well, a bit dazed, anyway). The song lost steam as it continued. If You Know What I Mean...I *hated* it! I understand your takes on it, but man, was that over the top and a stretch! And the performers completely ran out of jokes at the end and just STOPPED. I hope they can that one forever. NOT FUNNY, IMHO. Greatest Hits: Amusing, not terrific. I liked that Brad got to play along--wish Chip had gotten to in his appearance--but it wasn't brilliant, and Colin and Ryan didn't have much to say (though I liked three...no FORE songs). I think that one needs a rest. How about some other games, people? We *know* Wayne is a fantastic singer, but... However, the *balls* comment...HA! So glad ABC kept that in. Shocked, but pleased. 90 Second Alphabet: REALLY FUNNY! And of course, being the huge X-Files fan that I am, I was screaming, YES, YES, YES at the screen! Philes were having a field day during this game. I have to admit that I was also pleased that they kept in Drew's screwup w/ the letter V. Improv is supposed to be about spontaneity and *mistakes*, and DLiiA hardly ever shows that, unlike Clive's WLiiA version. So keep in some of the mistakes, ABC. It's more fun that way for those of us playing along at home. *g* Credits: Better than usual, but still not as effective as in the UK version. What *was* Brad doing there, anyway? Was he bored? No need for him to get in there, IMHO. Overall: Well, I guess I'd give it a B- or C+. The repeat ep following was funnier (Dead bodies! Ha! *Love* that structure!). The following represent my views only. Your mileage may vary. *g* Sue, waiting anxiously for The X-Files season premiere on November 7th... If it's a mistake that the performers take and make funny, for example, Drew skipping over V and his subsequent reaction, then yes, by all means, air it. Ryan's had trouble talking during Greatest Hits, they left that in, and it was all right because he and Colin made the fact that Ryan couldn't talk funny. On the other hand, there are bad mistakes. For example, watching Wayne struggle in his Ballad of... verse wasn't funny because it never got covered, so to speak. All he did was rhyme him with gym, and went back to the chorus. That's an unfunny mistake. So funny mistakes, yes. Unfunny mistakes, no. If ABC is going to edit the ep, and clearly they are, then they ought to edit out the kinds of mistakes you are referring to. Well, let me rephrase that. They ought to include games/structures that didn't *have* those kinds of mistakes. I have to think they have a number of games to choose from, and last night there seemed to be a higher than normal number that just didn't quite *work*. OTOH, mistakes, as you and I noted, that are *funny* and are handled, like Drew not getting the V, should stay in. The audience reacted to them, and so did I. And I still think there are too many *reaction* shots (i.e., showing Ryan and Colin laughing at something Drew did or said). Not necessary, IMHO. There are few shows on American TV that highlight improv. Because WLiiA is on one of the big *3* TV networks, and b/c it has such killer performers on it, I think we all want to see high caliber performances. Unless they aren't going to edit the ep at all, then they ought to be consistent in their editing. And of course, some eps are just going to be funnier than others, the way some improv shows are going to be funnier than others. That's whey they call it improv. You never know what you're going to get until the show is over. As always, the above reflect my comments only, and your mileage may vary. So I like to see the series capitalize on the performers' strengths, while also challenging them. We do NOT have to have TWO Wayne musical numbers every week, for example. He is fantastic at them, we all know, but for variety, why have "Song Styles" and "Greatest Hits"? Maybe one or the other? Comments Friday, 22-Oct-1999 23:48:48 24.129.56.200 writes: OK, here's my opinion on some of the show: LMAD: I think Brad and Wayne were a bit too familiar with the monster trucks. I didn't picture either one of them as the type to watch much of that stuff. ;-)Brad makes a great announcer. Ballad: I liked it...the "ballad of" style was done very, very well, in my opinion. It reminded me of some that I heard when I was a kid. I don't agree that Wayne was "floundering." Maybe he didn't come up with his most brilliant ryhmes, but he carried on the song fairly smoothly in the correct style and his chorus was great (btw, which might have been repeated because that was the structure of the song...improv songs often have sort of set formats to make it easier for people to sing together, thought the improvisers use their judgment to vary it, I would imagine). I am one of those people who enjoy seeing the performers struggle a bit. I almost always find it funny because I know how good they really are. I don't expect perfection every time so I don't criticize...I just sit back and enjoy. The only thing I'm finding a bit painful is the hoedowns..if you've been to a few tapings, you know what I mean. I've always loved hoedowns, but after seeing how badly they sometimes struggle, I want Dan to give them a break. They don't really have to do a hoedown (or 7 or 8) at every taping, do they? Especially not on a day when *everyone* is having problems. If you know what I mean: Nice to see a new game. It has potential, though I don't think it should be played often. I think perhaps the guys weren't quite sure what to do with that one. They should workshop it some more, get comfortable with how they want to play it. They don't always know what's expected of them in games. Colin's said once or twice that he and Ryan hate Narration (how many times have they played that?) because neither of them know quite what to do with it. Notice how differently Sweeney and Steen played Narration. They used it as an excuse to make the other person do increasingly outrageous things. I guess my point here is that sometimes they play games that are totally new to them and it takes a while to play it "correctly", where everything jells the way it should. Greatest Hits: I also was quite happy that they kept in the lounge song. I love all the performers' reactions to Brad's line. Again, I like it when something proves to the viewers that it is really improv. Sometimes this version seems too polished. Show the screw-ups and crack-ups! Alphabet: Alphabet has always been one of my favorite games. I don't like the time constraints either and I find the time-left announcements distracting. Not going to be one of my favorite episodes--an average one (which means, of course, that I'll watch it only 3-4 times instead of...well, we don't need to go into that). But, remember, that "average" on Whose Line means pretty darn funny. I still laughed quite a bit. P.S. Yes, Mykola Paluck is a he. A very big, burly he, supposedly. Someone posted an article about him a while back.
