Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) Thursday, 28-Oct-1999 23:08:29 141.209.159.207 writes: I'm glad at least somebody liked this episode, especially after all the complaining we did about having a Brit on the show. But you know me, and it takes a lot to please me. So here I go, and as a forewarning, you're all free to disagree with me (and you probably will). Let's Make a Date: Woah, woah, hold on a second. Two of the three "bachelors" are female characters! One female character can be funny, but two is just bordering on a surreal version of The Dating Game. As for the game itself, Wayne immediately started on Josie's accent, which was the funniest part. (I enjoyed watching Josie say, "Macko? No, sorry, matcho," with Wayne replying "It's 'macho!' and then doing the squeaky chalk.) Colin was also very good. He looked so realistically scared! And with Wayne spanking him, you might have missed noticing Colin was eating a banana. Ryan's quirk wasn't as good. I think this was probably the best game of the night. I sure talked about it enough. Film, Theater, and Television Styles: I don't know if I reviewed this aspect of the game on the MB, so allow me to repeat my thoughts... When I first saw that they were playing this with three people, I thought to myself, "Why didn't anyone think of that sooner?" But then I watched the game, and realized that the concept works better with only two people, because the third person invariably gets left out of the scene. This was true when Greg, Colin, and Ryan did it, and was true when Josie, Colin, and Ryan did it. It's just easier to play the game when you only have to play off one other performer. Ryan seemed to be the only one actually performing in this game today. News Flash: Wow, two three-player games that have left out Wayne in a row. All Josie contributed to this game was telling Colin to look out. Ryan was the only one giving hints, and in the end, Colin reused Ryan's asp joke. This really didn't seem special enough to air, although that fact does seem to confirm any suspicion that they'll make two episodes out of this taping. (At this point, notice that we've gone the whole first segment of the show without the mandatory singing game -- good job!) Weird Newscasters: Urg. Well, we all know I don't like this game. I've determined it's because the performers have to act alone, which isn't as funny as when they're playing off each other. And, oddly enough, when they do try to play off each other in this game (Ryan's home run), it comes off looking silly. I do give Wayne credit for making it look like he was having trouble staying on the treadmill -- very difficult to do on carpet -- and Colin came up with some very funny news stories. Better than most Weird Newscasters games turn out. Duet: Odd we're ending with this game. Hmm, maybe a lack of usable musical games at this taping? One MAJOR gripe here. We have a male singer and a female singer. Why aren't they singing to each other? Why are they instead singing about a member of the audience? I think Wayne and Josie are perfectly capable of creating a love song about an object suggested by the audience. Please, just one game of improv-a-song involving a suggestion of an object from the audience! Foreign Film Dub: On behalf of whoever winds up transcribing this game, let me just say... "Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!" Okay. Now that that's out of the way, I'll review the actual game. Both Drew and Josie did good fake Russian accents, and Colin and Ryan did very well at keeping the scene funny and moving along. (Bonus points to Colin for his quick thinking when Drew's mike came off.) Credits: Stupid VCR cut off the last 5-10 seconds of this. Josie kind of grabbed the scene away from Wayne, and her whining coupled with her accent made her hard to understand. I think we can all conclude that the non-reading performers are told to make funny in the background. I think it more often than not is pointless as well. Overall: I'd like to use this space to address the issue of making two episodes out of every taping. If you want your improv show to consist of only the highest-quality humor, it would seem wise to only take the best six games of the night and air them. If one or two other games were also particularly funny, then that is where the compilation episodes come in. Since so many recent tapings have been spliced into two episodes, I cannot see the logic of also having a compilation show. By the time you're looking for more games for the compilation, you're scraping the bottom of the barrel. If nothing else, I'm appreciating how rare the really funny games are, and while I give these performers all due credit, the editing of the tapings do make them look impossibly brilliant. F&TS: I only caught the end of this one...what I saw was...interesting... Newsflash: I thought this game had a few chuckles, yes, Josie didn't contribute much. I wonder if Colin really heard Ryan say the asp joke? Maybe that's why he reused it. Or maybe he just reused it. This game is turning into "when Colin starts running around see if his actions match teh video" although that does add for an extra element of chuckliness. Weird Newscasters: i thought this game was quite good as Weird Newscasters goes. I really liked Ryan's homerun (so did my dad, who's not a fan of the show). And Colin's stories were really good. Duet: This capped off the episode badly for me. I'm not a big fan of Josie, and I can watch her improvise scenes, etc. but I really don't like her songs. And I can't stand her heavy metal. This was punk or whatever, it sounded just like heavy metal. She's got a nice voice, and they pick a style in which she's just yelling and screaming? Oh, that makes sense...(insert sarcasm) Foreign Film Dub: I thought this was a good example of a Foreign Film Dub (but nothing will beat Ryan and Tony's Italian Farewell My Porcupine). And I cracked up at Colin's quick thinking when Drew's mike came off. That was hilarious. Good accents and it was not too draggish. Credit Reading: Can't say I loved it. Overall: I liked this episode. It had more laughs for me than usual. And I was excited b/c the second ep was one I'd never seen. Not taht that has anything to do with the first epsode...eh heh...well, I'd give it an 8.5/10. See, I can be objective! ;) A brief review: LMAD: Josie didn't contribute that much to it (except for laughing a lot, and that macho business), but Wayne was AWESOME! I didn't really buy Ryan as frat boy, but at least he knows who Limp Bizkit is! You go, Ryan! F&TS: Blair Witch Problem was HEELARIOUS, IMHO. Gee...do you think Drew didn't like the movie? Some of it worked, some didn't (Kung Foo), and I do have to agree w/ Scott--stick to two people. Weird Newscasters: Excellent. 'Nuff said. Duet: I didn't buy the punk rocking, though Kenny was cool. He really seemed to enjoy his 3 minutes in the sun. LOVE Josie, but this isn't where she shines, though she was game enough. BTW, really like her hair now, but her clothes were a bit baggy. And can someone explain--I have yet to hear why--Colin looks so emaciated this season? Is he unwell, or did he just go on a super diet or something? Foreign Film Dub: Never liked it, still don't like it. Pretty lame scenario, I thought. Credits: Not bad, but certainly not as good as in the UK days. I really do wish ABC would run them all down the middle of the screen, so we can see what they're reading. I thing Josie was strong, overall (b/c she always is), but did she seem a mite out of her element? I guess I mean she didn't have the normal level of comfort she had in past eps. This would make perfect sense, as I assume she hasn't performed recently w/ these guys. Still, I liked the ep, and also the one following (which I had never seen before), w/ the exception of Helping Hands. I really, really do not like Helping Hands. Ryan's "Are you my mommy?" during Weird Newscasters almost made me cry, OTOH! LOL! Can't wait to see the semi-improvised Drew Carey ep in November, and is there *any* way we can get Clive to appear on Whose Line? I would sign any kind of petition, etc.! :) Sue Sue B ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Scott R.: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (28-Oct-1999 23:08:29) Steph: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 06:25:55) Sue B : Re: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 10:00:49) Natalie Elizabeth: Re: Re: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 14:58:35) Steph: On Colin's so-called emaciation (29-Oct-1999 18:25:46) Emile: My thoughts of the 10/27 episode... Maybe it was just because they had some new person ( I know Josie's not new... but she is for the Dliia version) on it. I really don't have much to say about the games themselves.... but the contestants. Everyone seemed to be in a very good mood. Drew's jokes ,which usually lack the funny part, were actually amusing. Josie was like a breath of fresh air. Wayne laughed his head off when Ryan starting playing with his pants and Colin then started helping Ryan out which made him laugh even harder... everyone just seemed to be having such a fun time! That's all I really wanted to say. Sometimes even if the games aren't as good, it's nice to see the contestants having a ball. Friday, 29-Oct-1999 15:47:05 216.94.229.16 writes: First of all, I must ask one thing. Was the ABC censor on a tea break? Or maybe, just *maybe*, ABC is finally starting to loosen up! :) I mean, I was quite surprised to hear Josie's "love bitch" lyric during her punk song with Wayne. Not to mention her saying "Bastards!" during the credits. This episode almost, *almost* made me think I was watching a British episode. I mean, I practically died laughing when Ryan and Colin were doing the "pants" thing right after Weird Newscasters. I couldn't believe they let that through, but I'm glad they did at any rate :) Anyway, my opinions of tonight's episode... (1) Let's Make A Date - pretty good overall. Wayne was a great strict schoolmarm. Colin was hilarious, especially during the second round when he started blubbering, looking absolutely terrified. Ryan, was....well, Ryan as usual! :) BTW, is it just me or does Drew's British accent sound Chinese? :) (2) Film & Theatre Styles - speaking personally, I quite like the 3-player version, though I do see where you guys are coming from. Ryan did seem to dominate the game (during the last half of the game). I loved their take on Blair Witch...the look of terror on Colin's face was priceless "WHO'S HOLDING THE CAMERA?!?!" (3) News Flash - I must say I'm getting a little tired of Colin always being the reporter in the field. After all, Ryan was also the reporter in the UK version. I think a bit of variation is a good thing, and knock off all those horror flix / nature films. :) Choose some other things for the reporter to guess :) (4) Weird Newscasters - a good performance overall. Josie did great Shakespeare (as if we couldn't guess, her being a member of the Royal Shakespeare company and all that.) Wayne was incredible as always, how does that boy do it! Ryan too was very good...I *knew* that he was gonna do that. :) Nice to see the others get into it too. "Get it! Get it! Safe!!" (5) Duet - I was so looking forward to hearing Josie sing, but I was a little disappointed that they were doing punk rock. Don't get me wrong, I do like Josie's heavy metal/punk, but I was hoping for something that sorta showcased her beautiful voice. :) A great effort overall :) And Kenny seemed to get into it as well, he sure was a good sport! (6) Foreign Film Dub - I have a love/hate relationship with this game. Sometimes I think they're brilliant, and sometimes I despise them...tonight's though was very good (the best FFD on DL, second only to the Chinese FFD "Geshundheit!") Drew and Josie were quite good, and Colin managed to save the game with his quick wit (when Drew inadvertantly lost his mike when he took off his jacket...Drew, Drew, Drew... :) Credit reading - Better than some of the others, if only for Ryan and Colin slow dancing in the background (can we say AWWWW!) Overall, an excellent episode, and a great treat to see Josie make her first Whose Line appearance since 1997. Great choice of games, all played very well...My rating? 9/10. This has been my opinion...any similarity to other's opinions are purely coincidental. :) Emile ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message thread: Scott R.: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (28-Oct-1999 23:08:29) Steph: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 06:25:55) Sue B : Re: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 10:00:49) Natalie Elizabeth: Re: Re: Re: Discussion of episode 212 (tonight's) (29-Oct-1999 14:58:35) Steph: On Colin's so-called emaciation (29-Oct-1999 18:25:46) Emile: My thoughts of the 10/27 episode...
