(spoilage here, also) Thursday, 16-Sep-1999 20:58:14 205.206.241.69 writes: Okay. First thought that ran through my head: "Hey! That's Chip! This is a new episode!" Then: "Hey! Colin's hair is white-ish blonde and sort of silly-looking!" (I got used to it, though!) I'm pretty dumb for not knowing this was a new episode, huh? Well, a run-over of it of what I can remember... LMAD: I thought this was excellent. I was just *waiting* for Wayne to do Stan (I also do an impression of him which I think is the funniest character) and then when he satrted singing like Chef! Oh! it was great! And Colin's torture thing: he really did manage to look very emaciated. Amazing! Ryan's vulture was superb. It cracked me up. This Broadway Three-Headed Thing: This was *so* hilarious! I laughed my ass off! I bet Colin was happy he finally got to do a singing game. He did sound good, too! Ryan almost lost it a couple of times, especially when Colin couldn't think of a word for a few seconds, then "lumber" and that make me chuckle, too. It was a good game, I hope it surfaces again. Props: A regular game of props. Stand, Sit, Bend (I think was next): Thsi one was pretty good although to me this game is getting old; it's the same kind of thing every time. Greatest Hits: This was a *great* topic! These songs were great, and this game made me like Chip (I never really did before). I think he's pretty good. I liked the salsa song, and the other instruments (surprisingly) didn't drown out the singing. Hoedown: Pretty good verse from Drew, although Chip's was what I expected from him, but funnier than his usual ones. I though Colin's verse was okay, and Ryan's was kind of chuckly. I liked the "fills my head with yuck" part. Credits: I liked them. They were funny. Did anyone else notice that Chip actually had his name down as "Charles"? And, yeah. I think those were all the games. Overall, I thought this was a great way to bring in the new season, with a new game and everything. It was funny almost the whole way through. And I did get used to Colin's new hair colour, but I still think he is a better-looking brown-haired guy. That colour was too close to white. It made him look older than he is, which is sad. That's probably what helped contribute to emaciated look in LMAD. Anyway, Enough rambling, this was a plenty long post. And am I the only one who didn't know this was a new episode before I started watching? I mostly post on the Brad board (www.bradsherwood.com), but as this is a more general review of DLiiA, I thought I would post here, too... I'm sorry to say that I found this episode: BOR-ING. I say this not just b/c Brad wasn't on it (though he undoubtedly would have SPICE (GIRL--get it?!)ED it up, but it was just dull, IMHO, with the exception of The Three Headed Sopranos *g*. THAT was very funny and well-done. Chip Esten sings really well, and is a good improver (I have seen him on Instant Comedy w/ the Groudlings a number of times), but...I dunno...there was just no real momentum in this ep (again, JMHO). And has ABC *added* commercials? Yeesh. Plus reading the credits in their style of one's own choosing w/out Clive just doesn't have the old zing, you know? Esp. when Colin runs out of names to actually read and looks confused...and has he lost a *lot* of weight? He is looking slightly emaciated... I missed Dating Game, due to a Tropical Storm Floyd weather update (I live in Boston), but most of the rest of the ep just seemed flat, and having THREE musicians is distracting, IMHO. Maybe I'll like future eps better. I hope so. Hoedown was okay, but not memorable (except Ryan's dig at Drew!). OTOH, the second ep, the one w/ Brad as guest star, was maybe the funniest one of season one! I am not biased or anything...*VBG* No, I really think that one was a keeper. The Monkey Structure was pretty darn amusing, and Weird Newscasters was funny as hell (no one does a microphone like Wayne!), not to mention film dub, song to rap, and your Brad and Wayne's love song. Lucky woman! *g* So...I hope future eps, w/ or w/out (but esp. w/ Brad, of course!) are as funny as the second ep was. Chalk it up to sophomore jitters, p'raps. Again, this is just my opinion, and your views are likely to differ. I eagerly await future new eps, of course. Good luck w/ the rest of Tropical Storm Floyd, East Coast minions. No particular person has to be in any episode to make it good, but then I'm a fan of the *show*, not of any particular person on it. I think there was one extra set of commercials between hoedown and the credit reading, but that was in Canada. I assume it follows the same pattern as ads in the US. It just seemed...well, perhaps uneven is a better word. The show didn't seem to flow for me. I think one musician, *maybe two*, is enough, and I did enjoy the Hoedown at the end. I thought there was one extra, unneeded commercial break, and I also thought that Colin looked uncomfortable reading the credits "in the style of a bus driver" at the end when the names ran out. I thought there *were* good things in the ep (the three headed tenor was *very* well-performed), and Chip and Wayne made a nice singing tag team, but overall, this ep wasn't a stellar one for me. This is JUST my opinion, and as always, *your* mileage may vary. 'k? *g* But please don't think my comments had to do w/ the fact that Brad wasn't on there. I love the guy, but if a show works for me, it works, and if doesn't...well...then it doesn't. For example, in the next ep, I thought the funniest scene was moving people w/ Colin and Ryan. It is the *structure* as well as the performers...it's the flow of the show...it's Drew's interaction w/ the crowd...it's all elements that makes a show work or not work for me. (if that's possible...) some thoughts: south park was excellent ("they killed bachelor number 2!"). the heavy metal was hysterical. i didn't notice colin's hair, but i did notice that he's lost weight. the hoedown was silly :) but funny... car salesman is a difficult topic. wayne is in SO many more acting games now... which is GREAT, because he's teriffic at them! i have always liked games in the 3-headed genre... and i was very happy that all 3 of them stayed on pitch! ("...lummmmberrrr...") drew seemed a bit more relaxed. the ryan-colin pairings were not played up as they were last year. overall... an A. change is good... especially when it involves chip esten :) and the rerun is one of my alltime favorite DL's ever... He was ultra cute. *ehem*swoon*ehem. Okay, for my thoughts of the show. LMAD First off, Chip was a great woman. :P Wayne did a great job as the characters of SP. He did a great job as Cartman and Chef. Colin, who I was wondering why he looked different, was great as a torture victim, I almost peed my pants just watching him. I loved Ryan as the vulture? I loved the expression on his face. And when he flew to Drew's desk. Oh that really got me laughing out loud. 3 Headed Broadway Musical This blew me away, because I finally got to hear Rayn Sing, OMG he's a good singer. I almost started swooning while he was doing that. This game rocked. I hope there's more to come. Props Same old same old Stand, Sit, Lie I always like watching this game, because it makes me laugh when I see the guys screw up. And did anybody notice when Colin and Wayne were trying to decide to lie down that when Colin layed down he said something about, "I'm older" or something like that. Hoedown This was great. Chip did a wonderful job, Why did he say that thing about Tulsa, is he from there? I loved Drew's and Ryan's hoedown's hoedwns the best though. Credits Oh it's so great to see them back. Colin was so great, and I loved how the guys interacted in the backgroud. Who put their hands over Colin's eyes, was that Chip? For the most part I thought this was great. The only problem I had was they should've had more Chip. And also to me Chip seemed a bit uncomrtable, I don't know why, but he still did a good job. Okay, that's all of my rambling. Anyone who has been to a sitcom taping will notice that at least once or twice taping will stop because of actors flubbing their lines. Whose Line tapes for two to three hours. That means the script would have to be 75 pages long. They shoot 3 shows a weekend over 3 weekends. That means the players would have to memorize 225 page of dialogue in one week. At the taping I was at there was no "flubbing of lines" As talented as these guys are I really don't think that is possible. There seems to be a bit of the "I can't do that so how can anyone else" syndrome going around in regards to Whose Line. I can't do brain surgery but I have to admit it does exist. Friday, 17-Sep-1999 14:21:00 141.209.29.172 writes: This oughta spark a better debate than that "not improvised" crap. (My explanation is that Ryan was forgetting that he could only say one word... it's hard to do, ya know.) Let's Make a Date: After seeing the interaction between Colin's glutton and Ryan's chicken in a previous episode, I'm having trouble reminding myself that the quirks are not chosen to interact with one another. The performers are doing very well at that. Best moment: Chip asking Ryan what kind of animal he would be. Three-Headed Broadway Singer: Best game of the episode, hands down. Colin came up with a couple funny ones ("Steve" comes to mind), and "Timber is love" is just SO Broadway-musical-ish. Props: Wayne wins this game, with the baboon and the "All in the Family" reference. Stand, Sit, Lie: Heck, I was just happy that the game was Stand, Sit, LIE again. Wayne trying to lie down on the stool was funny, and the scene did pretty well, despite having been done on the British version before. Did anyone else notice the OBVIOUS edit? Greatest Hits: Alas, Wayne and Chip do not have the same chemistry that Brad and Wayne have. The songs came out kind of awkward, you could especially see Wayne looking back at Chip during the heavy metal song to see if Chip was coming forward with a verse. The songs didn't have quite the same spark that Greatest Hits usually has. Hoedown: Chip offered us a Hoedown tune that is very Hoedown-like and breaks the traditional mold. Drew, copying Chip's singing style, did all right for himself. Colin's first two lines are often much better than his second two (as was the case here -- rhyming "ethics" and "pathetic" is both clever and funny). Watching Ryan grab his face in an effort to control his singing after the "yucks" line was different to see, and he ended the song on a great note. Credits: The scene would have been flat had the other three not jumped up. Wayne made the scene enjoyable. Chip committed an improv no-no: he was so busy concentrating on his own actions and touching people that he didn't see what had happened earlier: Colin had thrown Wayne out the door of the moving bus. When Wayne pantomimed hanging on to the outside, Chip reached over and touched him. With the reduced screen, it was easy to miss classic Ryan-in-the-background: He couldn't open a window, I assume so he could throw up. A word about ABC's practice of credit-showing: If they plan to show the actual program's end while the credits are running, why not just let the credits roll over (or auto-page on the lower half of the screen) the full-screen shot of the program? The same applies to their sit-coms. The yellow shape on the left side of the screen can only distract from what's going on on the right side of the screen. Since ABC has been doing this for quite some while, I can't attribute this to the fact that it's bcause it's WLiiA?, but the whole thing in general just bugs me. Overview of episode: The first thing that I noticed was that Chip looks different. Of course, years tend to do that to any person. Maybe it was because he was under-utilized in the games, but I thought that he didn't quite fit in anymore. Like all things in life, this show has changed over time, and he kind of seemed out of place. Didn't John Sessions come back once for a later-season British WLiiA?, and the consensus was the same? (Oh, by the way, there were the same number of commercials as always. Apparently everybody tunes out early, because the structure is as such: A few games, commercial, few more games, commercial, Drew's game, commercial, credits. The only difference here is that there was something to watch during the credits, so you had to sit through another set of commercials, and thought it felt longer.) (More inside) Friday, 17-Sep-1999 17:18:35 207.168.193.205 writes: After watching last night's episode (which, like some others, I felt was uneven. Sorry), I awaited the. After the performers names, ABC "squeezed" the remaining credits into that stupid yellow sidebar. What makes me think the credit reading was edited is the fact at the mere SPEED that the credits pass by when in the yellow "thingie." If you taped it, have a look. They pass by the screen MUCH faster. Did anyone see the credit reading at the taping to confirm that this was edited? Maybe someone in Canada got to see them full-screen and can back up this theory. After the last credit appeared, ABC FADED-OUT the picture right after Colin said "get off." I think they decided to cut it at what they thought was an unnoticeable place, but when it fades out, it doesn't appear that Colin was finished. Anyone who's seen ABC shows in syndication will realise that on syndicated episodes, the credits are the proper FULL-SCREEN versions. My guess is that the credits were taped as a roll (or at least, full screen like the initial ones), Colin improvised to those, and ABC patched together THEIR version for network airing to cut a few seconds off the running time. Why not complain to ABC that we want to see the credits FULL SCREEN and UNEDITED? Surely, they can spare a few seconds of precious commercial time to give us what was recorded? Also, Doesn't it seem stupid to break up the last game and credits with commercials? Surely, the commercials would be better episodes, but I guess they did that to try to keep people from channel-hopping after one show stops... Another point: if Wayne was the winner, why wasn't HE chosen to read the credits? Drew picking a winner is actually pretty pointless. If he want's more than one person in his scene, he lets the "winner" sit out, if he's interacting with one person, then the one who "plays" is the winner. Why not make it more interesting and have the winner(s) read the credits and have the loser(s) play a game with Drew? Not to say that Drew's a loser, of course (I still think he should stay behind the *?$@ desk, but I guess him being in the improv was an ABC idea). It ruins the fun when we say like, "I think this show was edited" or "They should have done..." I know a few of you have gone to more improv stuff and have more experience than me, so it's natural to nit pick at every detail, but it just doesn't seem fun. Yes, I did notice Chip didn't seem uncomfortable, but what I heard they didn't show the other games he's done. The only nit picking i'd probably do is to say that ABC seems to be concentrating on the three main performers (Wayne, Colin and Ryan) and not concentrating on the other person. I would have loved to have seen more Chip. Okay, so I'm a hypacrite, but I still think a lot of nit picking makes things unfun. Friday, 17-Sep-1999 22:24:52 141.209.157.159 writes: First of all, it's obvious ABC faded to black before Colin was done, as he was yelling when they went out. It's not the first time the performers have gone on after the credits were done, and certainly won't be the last. Yes, they taped a version with the credits rolling over Colin and company. However, ABC being ABC, they took the source tape that just showed Colin without words on his face, shoved it over to the right-hand side and retyped the credits and displayed them in their unique way. I feel that if they're not going to run advertising in the right-hand side, it's silly to show credits in such a way, but I guess it makes ABC distinguishable. Also, you should have noticed that the speed of ABC's yellow side bar credits was going at a different speed than the ones Colin was performing to. He says Keith Richmond's name before we even see it. In the American version, reading the credits has nothing to do with being the winner. Notice Drew was back at his desk and didn't relate the credits to the winner at all. It was just a "here's another bit of improv for you to enjoy" sort of thing. No new American viewers realize that credits were associated with winning in the past, and therefore saw nothing wrong with Colin getting to read. A note to Molly: Being the television major that I am aspiring to be, I enjoy watching to see how the show was edited. This allows me to see poor editing (209's Stand, Sit, Lie) as well as well-done editing. I watched the cut to the close-up of Colin in the Blind Date Hoedown a number of times, and was amazed at how smoothly it was patched together. I'll continue to point out poor editing because I feel it's of general interest to see that something got cut out. Also, when a game doesn't work as well as I like, I can always blame the editing. (For the record, I do watch the show and just enjoy the talent of the performers -- the first time around. I tape each episode, and as soon as WLiiA? is over, I rewind it and go through it again to analyze it more closely. Again, that's because of my interest in television production.) (n/t) (17-Sep-1999 16:28:14) Andy: FOLLOW-UP ON ABC's CREDIT ROLL! IT APPEARS TO BE EDITED! (More inside) (17-Sep-1999 17:18:35) Molly: One more thing (17-Sep-1999 18:33:30) Scott R.: Answers from the one working toward a television production major... (17-Sep-1999 22:24:52) Steph: Does anyone else think teh credit-reading seemed akward since hardly any of the names were what the guys are used to? And that Chip was "Charles"? (n/t) (17-Sep-1999 21:17:56) Wayne: He was credited as 'Charles' on the 'Brian Benben Show' and on a 'Jessie' guest spot last season. Brian Benben must be only 4 feet tall because Chip looked huge next to him but was miniscule on Jessie and DLiiA? (n/t) (18-Sep-1999 15:52:01) Jessie (with an i, but whichever way works I guess *G*): *L* Jesse actually. That show has caused me no end of trouble, using the male spelling of the name for a female char ... oh well ;) (n/t) (19-Sep-1999 10:54:52) Evan/Brem: I missed the new ep! No one spoil! Thanks, Hurricane Floyd. Thanks a WHOLE LOT!!! And now we can't make regional toll calls from our phone!!!
