But are we forgetting one of the great improvizers on the show? What about...Laura Hall! I know, you're all gonna say "But Drew points her out every game" but what is the truth? You all don't pay much attention to her, do you? Well, I didn't until I realized she's an improver too! She can't predict what kind of song Colin's gonna ask Wayne to sing as. She plays it happily, having to come up with the backround sound as quickly as Wayne can sing. So let's all applaud the great Laura Hall "From our 'hood to your 'hood, Mrs. Laura Hall. And yet another unknown improver...the camra people! They manage to get the best shots of the improvers, and one showed his talent when Wayne did the in love with the camraman thing. And the one where Ryan attacked the camra and the camraman shook it. Geez, so many improvers, so little time. Speaking of time, I've wasted enough of it! See ya! (And who is the best in making up names? Brad! And which was the funniest sketch in that wierd newscasters thing? I think it was Ryan's new one, where he tries to stop a dam from bursting, ah ha ha! Keep in mind, I'm a sorta new fan, I only saw one or two of the old episodes, but all of the new ones!) Well, let's keep it going, then Friday, 24-Sep-1999 19:10:32 141.209.159.207 writes: That's not an entirely new revelation. I know that I've realized how well the musicians perform on the spot, as well. In fact, I know I've pointed it out a couple times ("Did you hear how Laura played a variation on the Hoedown tune while Drew was thinking during the Going Bald Hoedown?"). Yes, it's true that many people probably don't give them the recognition they deserve. But, sadly, that's how the entertainment industry works. Ryan, Colin, et al are on camera most of the time, so they're the ones that people are going to focus on. But that doesn't mean that we don't appreciate the work the musicians do. In fact, on more than one occasion we've wished that we could see Richard Vranch improvise a scene instead of get stuck behind that piano all the time. However, that's not the way television works. If we're going to start pointing out crew members, then heck, we might as well go all out and name practically everyone! The director is a great improviser because not only does he has anticipate what's going to happen next in the scene, make sure a camera is positioned on it, and cut to it before it happens! (Yes, I know there's post-production work done, but they also try to get as much of the cutting between cameras on the first try as possible -- in yesterday's episode, watch the cameraman's "on" light go on and then off while Drew is giving him points.) Hey, even the standards and practices representative is a good improviser: they have to instantly decide if a term is inappropriate to make it to air and alert Dan before the scene goes too far, so when the scene is redone, it stays fresh in the performers' minds. Most every television production involves a good deal of improvisation, just like life itself. However, the premise of the show is "Watch these four people make up funny stuff," which is why that is the focus of most of our conversations. Live things need improv skills, not things that can be edited and stuff like that. Life itself is improv. Unless you're reading something, you're doing improv. And even if you are reading something. So ha ha ha, I can be logical too! "Watch These People Do Funny Stuff" that's a good title, we should try and ask ABC to rename it that. Reality is a bringdown Friday, 24-Sep-1999 23:14:27 141.209.159.207 writes: Despite the fact that WLiiA? goes through a period of post-production, there is still an effort on the part of the director to choose the correct cameras "live on tape" as the term is in the TV biz. While it is useful to have the footage from the different cameras at one's disposal during the post-production process, it also would take a tremendous amount of time to put together the entire show by taking pieces of the recorded footage. In the world of TV, where time definitely is money, it is easier to call the correct shots while the scene is going on, and committing that to tape as well. That way, going into post, you have an entire tape of edited show at your hands, and all that needs to be done is add the various shots of Drew, etc. that cover up the gaps left when certain portions of scenes are cut to fit time constraints. For example, watch a game of Telethon. Instead of the traditional jump cuts used in the other games, the director uses a dissolve during the time when Brad and Wayne are singing. If you watch the NBA Telethon game, you can also see the one jump cut during the song, which connected the two takes of the song Brad and Wayne were asked to do. In other words, the director was dissolving between cameras in the production booth right during the song, then went to post and edited the two songs together, a much faster process than editing the whole game together. As for the tone of my message, I don't believe I was being much different than you. I quote the beginning of your message: "Ha ha ha! Ryan just did something funny! Oh, and look at Colin, ho ho ho!" If that isn't mocking, I'd like to know what it is. As for "So ha ha ha, I can be logical too!", I wasn't accusing you of not being logical. Laura Hall certainly is a good improviser, but the rest of what I said is true, too.
