Generation No. 2

2. FRANCOIS BIENVENU "DIT"2 DELISLE (MICHEL1 BIENVENU)1 was born 19 September 1666 in Parish of St. Pierre le Vieux, Vendee, La Rochelle, France, and died Abt. 29 September 1751 in Detroit, Michigan. He married (1) GENEVEVA CHARON "DIT" LAFERRIERE1 1701 in Canada, daughter of JOHN LAFERRIERE and ANN D'ANNEVILLE. She was born 8 December 1679 in Quebec, Canada, and died 14 August 1708 in Detroit, Michigan. He married (2) MARY ANN LEMOINE1 20 August 1708 in Montreal, Canada. She was born 5 April 1685 in Lachine, and died 6 September 1754 in Detroit, Michigan.

Notes for FRANCOIS BIENVENU "DIT" DELISLE:

Francois Bienvenu was called "DeLisle" as a "nom de guerre," or military nickname. Many of the French soldiers had these nicknames to remind people where they were from in France or to describe personality or physical features. DeLisle translates to "from the island," and Francois was "from the island" of Oleron and born in the village of St. Pierre, which still exists, west of the city of La Rochelle off the west coast of France. Francois came to Canada as a soldier and accompanied Father Angeliran on missionary visits to different Indian groups. Father Angeliran was Superior of the missions to the Ottawas at Missilimackinac de Ste. Marie du Sault (Sault St. Marie), to the Miamis, to the Illinois, to the Puans of the Bay and to the Sioux. Francois was a lieutenant when he accompanied Father Angeliran on his missionary work. These facts are found in the papers of Cadillac. In fact, on June 7th 1687, Cadillac's own papers indicate that Cadillac retook possession of the lands in the neighborhood of the straight ("detroit") between Lakes Erie and Huron, and that these lands were recovered by Sieur de la Duranthais. The signing of these documents were witnessed by Francois on June 7th, 1687 (14 years before the settlement of Detroit was established by Cadillac himself).

Francois most likely accompanied Cadillac on his founding voyage to Detroit in 1701. Francois' son Raphael was born in Detroit in 1703 and buried there on April 24, 1706. Even Father Denissen places the DeLisle family in Detroit before 1704. Records of Detroit from 1701 to 1703 were lost when the first Francois became orphan at the age of eleven and it is thought that some relative of his mother must have taken care of him and his brother and sister. It is not known why and when he left for New France in Canada.

St. Anne's Church went up in flames within the fort. When the new register was made the first entry was the birth of Cadillac's daughter Mary Teresa who was born on February 2, 1704. The second entry was the death of Raphael DeLisle, Francois' son who was buried on April 24, 1706.

Francois was finally given land outside the fort, with the permission of King Louis XIV of France. Francois' property was south of the fort next to the village of the Potawatomi Indian village. Francois was known to trade brandy with the Indians and was written up in Cadillac's papers, because some settlers complained of problems with the Indians after DeLisle sold them brandy. In the records of Tanguay, DeLisle was said to have been a tavern keeper. If DeLisle was a tavern keeper, he probably opened the tavern on his property or within the fort. Francois' land was located where the base of the bridge to Canada now exists. In fact it is likely that Francois' land is now where the American side of the Ambassador Bridge now rests. This land was later traded by Alexis for a large tract of land on the River Rouge, which is now the township of River Rouge, where DeLisle Street still exists. Later the family moved to a site off Dearborn Road in Delray.

Before 1701, Francois raised a rebellion ar Missilimackinac with Messieur de Courtemanche and Messieur de Mauthet and they were all put under arrest at Montreal and afterwards sent to Quebec were they remained for a month. This occurred well before Francois came to Detroit. Francois probably served under Cadillac at Fort Mackinac before accompanying Cadillac on his founding voyage to Detroit. This rebellion was probably started when the Jesuits interfered with Francois' ability to trade brandy with the Indians. It was well known that the Jesuit priests were not fond of the brandy trade, but Cadillac knew that the Indians would leave and trade their furs with the British for rum if they couldn't get French brandy. Cadillac and others knew that without the brandy trade their would be no fur trade with the natives.

Cadillac's papers also indicate that Francois owned a fine razor. Francois probably had no beard or mustache.

She was born 5 January 1823 in Detroit, Michigan, and died Bef. 1903 in Detroit, Michigan.

Notes for SR. PETER (WELCOME) BIENVENU DELISLE:

Peter was also known as "Welcome DeLisle," and was called "Welcome" by many in Delray and Detroit. Welcome's obituary in the Detroit Journal indicated that he had the timber contract for Fort Wayne when it was built on the Detroit River. This was probably because his mother was Monica Livernois the daughter of Joseph Livernois, who owned the land where the fort was built. The street which starts at the entrance to Fort Wayne is Livernois Avenue, which starts at the fort and travels north through Rochester Hills. Livernois Avenue is one of the longest, if not the longest street, named after a French family in the city and suburbs of Detroit.

Welcome's obituary reads: Welcome DeLisle, one of the oldest and best known residents of the downriver suburban district, died of old age at the residence of his son, Rep. Peter DeLisle, Delray, at 3 a.m. He had been failing for some time. Welcome DeLisle was a descendant of an old French family which came to Detroit early in the history of the settlement and owned a tract of land in the western part of the city. From there the DeLisles moved to River Rouge early in the last century (1800's) and took up a tract of land adjoining Dearborn Road on which the old DeLisle residence is still standing.

When Fort Wayne was built the timber contract went to Welcome DeLisle. He was prominent in township affairs for many years and held the offices of treasurer, highway commissioner and school inspector.

He is survived by four children: Representative Peter B. DeLisle, Charles DeLisle and Mrs. John Abbott of Delray and Richard DeLisle of Toledo. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed.

In another notice it indicated that: Welcome DeLisle's forefathers came over from France with the earliest French settlers, from Louis Quatorze, who was at that time the reigning monarch of France. Welcome secured a grant to what is known as the LaFontaine farm in the vicinity of Eighteenth Street in Detroit. The DeLisle family finally traded the land for a large tract on the banks of the River Rouge, which was at that time almost a wilderness, but which is now the site of the village of River Rouge. These hardy settlers, located on the river bank and made houses of logs, in which they lived until the River Rouge in the Spring of the year began to overflow its banks. Then the handful of settlers pitched in and moved their dwellings back to what is now Dearborn Road.

Welcome was 88-years-old when he passed away. Photos of him exist in the Detroit Journal newspaper. Welcome wore a white "billy-goat" style beard and was partly bald like his son Peter Jr. (Representative DeLisle).

Marriage Notes for BERTHA DELISLE and MICHAEL LYONS:

From the Detroit Journal under a headline: "First High Mass in Delray at the DeLisle-Lyons Wedding" (Sketch of Bride and Groom above article)

The marriage of Miss Bertha I. DeLisle and Michael P. Lyons of Walkerville, took place in All Saints' church, Delray, at 10 o'clock this morning (Thanksgiving Day), Rev. Fr. Doman officiated.

The Bride was led up the main aisle by her father, Supervisor Peter B. DeLisle. Miss Alice Riopelle (Berty's cousin) was maid of honor, while Misses Evelyn Belisle and Ida DeLisle, a sister of the bride (not a sister story was incorrect), were bridesmaids. The bridegroom was attended by his brother Timothy Lyons of Chicago, as best man. George DeLisle (of Delray) and Edward DeLacey of Springfield, Ohio were the ushers.

Miss DeLisle, who has long held the title of belle of Delray, fully justified that reputation this morning. She was gowned in a travelling suit of castor broadcloth, with brown poplin trimmings and a brown velvet bolero. She wore a big picture hat of blue velvet and carried a bunch of white roses.

Michael P. Lyons, the bridegroom, is well known in Walkerville, where the couple will make their home (made their home in Delray actually) after a short wedding trip. He is a native of Springfield, Ohio, who has arisen by dint of hard work to occupy the position of superintendent of the Walkerville Malleable Iron Works.

The first high mass ever celebrated at a wedding in Delray was chanted by Fr. Doman at the conclusion of marriage service. After that the newly married pair were driven to the home of the bride at 22 Crossley Avenue, Delray, where a combination wedding and Thanksgiving dinner was served. At 3 o'clock they left for a short wedding trip to the old home of the groom in Ohio.

Another announcement was entitled: "Miss Bertha DeLisle, The Belle of Delray, Married to Michael Lyons of Walkerville" (Photo of Bride and Groom above article)

Miss Bertha DeLisle one of the prettiest girls in Wayne county, and the acknowledged belle of Delray, was married at 9:30 this morning to Michael P. Lyons, of the Walkerville Malleable Iron Works, by Rev. Fr. Robert F. M. Doman at All Saints' catholic church.

Miss DeLisle, who is the daughter of Supervisor Peter B. DeLisle, was attired in a travelling suit of poplin-castor shade and carried a shower bouquet of bridal roses. Miss Alice Riopelle was maid of honor and Evelyn DeLisle bridesmaid. The bridesmaid and maid of honor wore dresses of navy blue and carried chrysanthemums. The groom was supported by his brother, Timothy Lyons of Chicago and George DeLisle as usher.

The church was handsomely decorated by the Young Ladies' sodality, of which the bride was a member. The bride is possessed of a sweet soprano voice and is a member of the choir of All Saints' church. Misses Riopelle and DeLisle, who acted as maid of honor and bridesmaid, are the daughters of the two women who acted in the same capacity for the bride's mother 26 years ago.

Notes for FATHER MICHAEL DELISLE LYONS:

Michael Delisle Lyons and his brother Frank were very active in amateur radio in their teenage years. When the first commercial radio in the world, WWJ (formerly 8MK), was built in the old Detroit News Building in Detroit, Michael assembled the equipment. Mr. Scripps, the owner of the Detroit News initially hired an outside contractor to build the radio antenna, but later hired Mike to fix the antenna since it never operated properly. The first broadcast was on August 20, 1920 several weeks before KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania began broadcasting (November 2, 1920 to be precise).

Many have argued that KDKA was the first commercial radio station in the world, however, DeForrest (an early radio pioneer) insisted WWJ was first because they had been broadcasting nightly since August 20, 1920. KDKA only broadcast twice a week since November 2, 1920, but they claim to be first since they received the first broadcasting license issued by the US government. Many people interested in early radio still argue over which station was first. Many who argue for KDKA, say that WWJ was only an amateur station. This however was not true. 8MK (the predecessor of WWJ) was built in the old Detroit News building and Mike and others were paid for their contributions, which led to the first broadcast in August 20, 1920. 8MK was issued a commercial license by the US government on October 31, 1921and the broadcast call letters were changed to WWJ (Named after W. J. Scripps). KDKA received their license on October 27, 1920.

Mike was a close friend of Ed Clark who operated amateur station 8AO, before he built WJR in Detroit.

Mike later entered the St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Missouri to become a Jesuit priest. Mike soon began studying at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri where he learned geology under Father James Bernard Macelwane, who established the Jesuit Seismological Association and the Seismological Society of America. After his studies in St. Louis the church sent Mike to St. Mary's College in Kurseong, India(in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains) where he finished his college studies. Mike was ordained a priest at St. Mary's on November 21, 1933. Mike then stayed in India as a Jesuit missionary until he resigned from the Jesuits in 1941. Mike was asked to resign when the Bishop discovered that a nun, Agnes or Sister Cecilia, who was sent to care for Mike became pregnant. Mike asked for dispensation to marry and live with Agnes and have a family but it was rejected. The Bishop had sent the nun with another "hospital sister" to assist Mike with his bouts of malaria, so that he could continue his missionary work.

After Mike resigned from the Jesuits, he remained in India with sister Agnes as husband and wife and had two daughters, Esther and Violet. Mike started selling articles he wrote about India to Colliers and other magazines, as well as working for the Federal Economic Administration of the US government. In late 1944, he was made to return to active priesthood and take up the position of the chaplain of the US army based in the city of Allahabad and was given the dispensation to work for the Federal Economic Administration of the US government by his Jesuit Bishop Bernard Sullivan of Patna Jesuit Mission. He continued supporting his family of Agnes and the two daughters living in Saharanpore. It was through the government that Mike became involved in supplying Beryllium for the first atomic/nuclear weapons. It is rumored that Mike was at Los Alamos, New Mexico for the testing of the first atomic bomb.

Mike was made to leave Agnes and his daughters and returned to the US 1947 just before the independence of India. While in USA he worked as a Jesuit Missionary and got the dispensation from his Jesuit Bishop to work for the Federal Economic Administration of the US government. He tried to return to India but was not permitted to do so by the British Government. Mike became an important source of Beryllium for nuclear weapons to the US Government from 1944 until his death in 1974. In early 1950s he got involved with a nurse from Detroit and moved to Colorado. He was able to receive the dispensation to live with the woman he met in Detroit, Petronilla Marchulones. She became his lover but they never married. Mike and Petronilla settled in Arvada, Colorado (between Boulder and Denver, near Rocky Flats Nuclear facility) in around 1950 till his death in 1974. He had a Beryllium Mine in his backyard and African Americans working for him as labourers. He had a CIA agent and had a FBI record on him.

Mike was allowed by the local Bishop to continue his missionary work with Indian tribes in neighbouring states (i.e. North & South Dakota), while he continued to supply Beryllium Only a couple of priests in the Jesuit community of St. Regis University knew Mike was a priest. Very few people at Rocky Flats knew Mike was a priest. Mike also began making ham radios for people who lived in the mountains west of Boulder, so that they could call the Sheriff's department if they needed help. Due to the mountains, phone lines could not be installed west of Boulder at the time. Mike later became the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Arvada.

Late in Mike's life he began having difficulty breathing and was put on oxygen. It was later discovered the Beryllium dust when inhaled destroys the lungs. Mike finally died in 1974 from "Chronic Beryllium Lung Disease." Two years before he died he returned to being an active Jesuit priest and said mass in his own house at 10,000 Alkire Street, Arvada-80002. Petronilla became his housekeeper and brought her mother to live with them. He was buried with the other Jesuits in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at the base of his Bishop Sullivan, his mentor from India and they had both served together there for almost 20 years. He had throughout supported his work and gave him dispensations except to marry and live with his family in India. Before dying Mike made a will for his “wife” Petronilla, leaving her with over a million dollars in cash and two properties, the property in Denver was 40 acres of land and another in Washington. Before dying, Petronilla, gave out the cash to the many churches in USA and India asking them to pray for her soul and that of a friend, Mike. She gave the sister s of charity the property in Denver and the Franciscan priest the property in Washington.

In 1965, Mike’s daughter, Esther, finally found him living in Denver, Colorado in defacto relationship with Petronilla. She lived with them for a fortnight and then returned to her mother and sister in India against the requests of her father Mike. He had deserted Agnes and daughters, Esther and Violet since he returned to the USA and they grew up in great shame, and poverty. Agnes took up nursing and supported her children herself. The missions and the Jesuits offered them the orphanages only. They never gave them any contacts to Mike, nor did they give Mike contacts to them, but Esther found him. She collected FBI files and other documents about Father Mike since 1987. Jeff McQueen, the grandson of one of Mike’s sisters finally located Esther and Violet Lyons in Australia in 1995 and invited them to meet the other members of her father’s family in USA and they accepted them. Esther has written her own book about her life in India, entitled: "Unwanted!," which is available throughout Australia and the USA. Esther now lives with her two sons Fabian and Mario in Sydney, Australia. Violet lives in Dehra Dun, India where she is the principal of her own school, with her husband. Violet's two children Michele and Jude live in Sydney, Australia also.

Notes for MARY FRANCES CONWAY:

Mary Frances came from a very well-to-do family of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The Conway family was well know for manufacturing cast-iron "pot belly" stoves. One extremely large stove built by the family business stood outside the Michigan State Fair Grounds for many years until it was finally disassembled. This stove was later rebuilt on its original site in 1998. Mary Frances loved animals and always had cats and dogs in her home. She loved to play cards, and gamble occasionally. She once made Father Perryman (a relative on the Lyons side of the family) swears when she won all of his two-dollar-bills in a poker game, which took place at Lake Margarethe in Grayling, Michigan where the McQueens and McCloys often spent their Summer vacations. Mary Frances' childhood friend was Barbara Couzens (a grand-daughter of James Couzens, who convinced Henry Ford to offer people $5/day to come to work on his automobile assembly lines). The Couzens owned Wabeek. Barbara Couzens also married Leo Brennen, who came from a wealthy logging family from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Leo serves as the Chairman of the Ford Foundation.

Press Release form the Governor's Office:

Governor Accepts Resignation of Patrick McQueen from Michigan Financial Institutions Bureau

June 25, 1999

Governor John Engler today announced that he has accepted the resignation of Patrick M. McQueen as Commissioner of the Michigan Financial Institutions Bureau (FIB), effective today. McQueen is leaving the FIB to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

"Pat's focused leadership has resulted in a more efficiently run organization and has created more opportunities for financial institutions in Michigan," said Governor Engler. "Since 1993, Pat has taken a proactive role in modernizing the Bureau. I wish him well as he re-enters the private sector."

"As Commissioner of the Michigan Financial Institutions Bureau, I sought not only to manage the Bureau effectively but to update the laws dealing with financial institutions in Michigan," noted McQueen. "As I leave this post, I am confident that Michigan's financial institutions are sound and that they are positioned to be competitive in the rapidly evolving financial world."

McQueen has served as Commissioner of the Michigan Financial Institutions Bureau since 1993 and was also Acting Commissioner of the Insurance Bureau during the first half of 1995. As the chief regulator of Michigan's 135 state-chartered banks, nine state savings banks, 314 credit unions and more than 4,000 other lenders, McQueen is responsible for ensuring the safety and soundness of these institutions for the citizens of Michigan.

McQueen has also been active in the leadership of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, a group comprised of the financial institutions commissioners from all 50 states.

The Governor also named Gary Mielock as acting commissioner.

Mielock, of Lansing, is currently FIB's chief deputy commissioner. He joined FIB in 1974, after 10 years at Manufacturers National Bank of Detroit (now Comerica). Mielock earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and his juris doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School.

Notes for MARY MARGARET MCQUEEN:

Mary died of skin cancer at the age of 39. She was always a very kind person, and had a great sense of humor.

Mary's Obituary from the Detroit News, Sunday, May 31, 1992 edition read as follows:

"Mary M. Rodzik, 39, a descendant of an explorer who helped found Detroit in 1701, died of cancer Friday, May 29, 1992, in her Troy home.

She was a pioneer in her own right, said her brother Clyde D. McQueen.

Mrs. Rodzik helped form a young adult cancer support group and was among the first wave of teachers of the mentally and physically handicapped during the 1970s, when Michigan began requiring that they be educated.

'My sister always found the time to participate with her husband and children in family, church and community activities,' McQueen said.

Born Mary McQueen in Detroit, Mrs. Rodzik was a descendant of Bienvenue dit DeLisle, who accompanied Antoine de LaMothe Cadillac when the city was founded in 1701.

She was a graduate of Detroit Mercy High School and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.

Mrs. Rodzik served as a teacher's aid in Southfield and also taught severely mentally and physically handicapped children in Lapeer.

She was an adult eduction teacher in Mt. Clemens and Hazel Park who taught English to foreign born adults.

'In the 1970s, when the state began requiring that institutionalized and severely handicapped children receive an eduction, my sister was among the first wave of teachers who pioneered that field,' her brother said.

Additionally surviving are her husband of 18 years, Dennis M., two daughters, Amy and Karen; a son, Michael; her mother, Helen McQueen; a sister and three brothers. . . Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield."
