February 2006

Welcome to our first update for 2006.  It's been a full-on few months, with Dave working every weekend from late November to the end of January (except Xmas/New Year) and Flick finalising her latest swimwear range for Wahine.  Dave was also offered and has accepted a directorship with Roberts Weaver, heralding an exciting change of direction and new set of challenges.

We've also managed to turn the back garden from a post-construction wasteland into a nice little oasis, thanks to the out of hours help of our talented landscaper friend Matt.  Just have to do the side and front now...

The garden's going to have to wait though, as Flick's into her sell-in (meaning a hectic travel schedule for the next couple of months) and we seem to be out of town almost every other weekend with a couple of weddings and trips to the Hunter on the cards between now and Easter.  Meanwhile Dave is back into the study.  But there's a respite ahead: Dave sits his exam for this semester in late April and then we'll be heading literally straight to the airport and flying to Hanoi (Vietnam) to start a 24 day holiday, with a rendezvous planned at Angkor Wat (Cambodia) with James and Corinne, plus a couple of nights on the way home with JP and Alicia in KL.

Anyway, on with the show.  Late 2005 included a visit by Flick's school friend Caroline and a fun girl's weekend (for Flick, that is - Dave was studying).

At Christmas we had a trans-Tasman invasion, with both Flick's and Dave's parents staying with us.  Christmas was a family affair, joined by good friends Toby & Diane (and kids Dominic and Cecilia) who have recently moved to Sydney (finally!!!) and Siobhan & Mark (with Christian).

Flick, Diane & Cecilia, Siobhan, Susan - Girls in the kitchen: always good to see.

(L) Starting young - Dom and Christian in the cellar with Dave; (R) Cecilia enjoys her fruit for the day.

(L) Yay - Presents; (R) Flick's new pool was put to good use.

(L) Susan, Flick, Ken, Mary, Andrew;
(R) A Christmas tradition established by the Baldwins and friends - champagne breakfast on the ferry on the last day of work.

While the folks were over we engaged in a couple of the "must-dos" in Sydney at this time of year, including watching the start of the Sydney to Hobart and waiting all afternoon/evening on a prime vantage point for the spectacular NYE fireworks, only to have some interlopers come and stand in front of you at the critical moment (actually, it wasn't too bad).

Apart from passing in a blur, January included visits from our friends Tamara (currently based in London) and party animal Michael (Brisbane), who christened the F&D "Floor Bar" on a raucous night in early January (unfortunately just after new tenants moved in next door - not a good start to neighbourly relations!)  We've been seeing a bit more of Matt and Tina (and daughter Indy) who are sponsoring the Twilight series at the Yacht Club and have been sailing and staying with us a couple of times.  We also caught up with Kevin and Lindsey (and Michael) at Opera in the Domain (a free performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, attended by around 100,000).  And of course staged our annual Australia Day extravaganza - Cecil Street Cinema.

Well, what can we say about Flick's Carnaval themed 30th party...  What a blast.  The photos only do partial justice.

Toby, Flick & Diane; Sam, Dave and Toby - brothers in... satin shirts.

Des; Paul & Deb (who got mixed up with the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras we think...); Ush, Frank & Linda

The scene; the music - Daniella and Jeff dance to a Samba beat.

After midnight it all became messy, especially when Michael opened the Floor Bar;

All the best,
Flick & Dave
