Members of our Gosney Family Tree have been living in New Zealand for several generations now, but our ancestors from these lines originally came from the United Kingdom and France. Information about them can be accessed from this page.
This information is presented in two different forms:
Basic FactsTo view basic facts such as dates for births, deaths or marriages of our direct line Gosney ancestors:
- Click on this link to see the Personal Ancestral File Web Page Report.
Biographical InformationTo view other details of our direct line Gosney ancestors that are not included in the PAF Report, such as the names of children in each family, and other more biographical information:
- Read this page for information that summarises where our ancestors lived before immigrating to New Zealand, as well as where they subsequently settled after arrival in New Zealand.
- Click on the Family Tree Diagram at the bottom of this page [Either the husband or the wife] to view more detailed information about each individual family.
Countries of Origin for our Gosney Ancestors
Before emigrating to New Zealand, except for John Shannon who was born in Victoria, Australia, our ancestors had lived in the UK and France in the localities listed here and illustrated in the accompanying diagram.
- Gosney - Wiltshire, England; Channel Islands.
- Vasselin - Channel Islands; La Manche, France.
- Shannon, Shannahan & Blake- Tipperary,Ireland; Victoria, Australia.
- O'Connor & Carney - County Cork, Ireland.
- McAuslin & Sommervile - Glasgow,Lanarkshire, Scotland.
- Stratton & Davidson - Ayrshire, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Wigtonshire, Scotland.

Regions of Settlement of our Gosney Ancestors in New Zealand
These pioneer families made the 3 month voyage to New Zealand by sea, arriving in the South Island of New Zealand between 1860 and 1883 initially settling in the following localities:
- Gosney - Timaru, Canterbury,South Island.
- Shannon (& O'Meara)- Dunedin (& Queenstown), Otago, South Island.
- O'Connor - Dunedin, Otago, South Island.
- McAuslin - Oamaru, Otago, South Island.
- Stratton - Dunedin, Otago, South Island.
- Simpson - Dunedin, Otago, South Island.

Eventually those branches who we are descended from were all living in Dunedin, one of the largest and most prosperous of New Zealands cities at one stage due to the Otago Goldrush.
As well as our ancestors who emigrated to New Zealand, it is likely that other relations of these immigrants would have emigrated instead to other countries such as Australia, Canada, Argentina or the USA, while some would have stayed back in the UK, Channel Islands and France. Consequently there may be branches distributed around the world.
We would be interested to hear from anyone interested in any of these family lines. We may be contacted via the link at the bottom of the page, or manually to mgosney@optusnet.com.au
