Mooney Pilots with USA License Can Lease This Plane
1978 Mooney M20J - current on US Register
Pilots meeting currency of 400TT, 100hrs in M20 aircraft (with no accidents within past 5 years) may lease this aircraft in Sydney, Australia. Also required are current medical, BFR, (and currency on instruments if your intention is to fly IFR).
The advantage to renting this aircraft is that you will not have to convert your license to an Australian license, which has become quite expensive. In most cases you will need to apply for an ASIC (Aviation Security Information Card). This can take several months to process but will allow you to fly to security controlled airports (basically all airports that have regularly seheduled airline service). It is possible to fly without this card, though there might be some difficulties. Arriving in a foreign registered aircraft tends to open doors, but not without potential problems. You can decide if it is worth the effort and expense.
I highly recommend that you first download a sample flight planning program from Champagne Software called Flight Planner 3000 (on links page). Plan a few flights to get a feel for distances and times. The program is very easy to use and runs very reliably.
Following a brief familiarization flight, and a review of Australian regulations (emphasizing differences between the USA and Australian system) you can begin your trip with up to date charts provided as part of the rental agreement. The data base for the IFR GPS will be current.
*Check out the links page for charts, weather and MAPA. Airservices Australia has links to current IFR charts that can be downloaded for free.
The current rate for rental is: contact me directly for further information.
Australia has a user fee system. All additional charges are the responsibility of the renter. Potential fees include movement charges, landing fees, tower fees, and enroute IFR charges. I will require a deposit equal to my insurance deductable ($1,500). You may want to check with your own insurance company about additional coverage.
201CM is hangared at YSBK (Bankstown/Sydney) and has a current annual and IFR certification.
