EPILOGUE:

                   NO SECOND FLOOD

God promised there would be no second Flood:
The waves are daily rising ever higher--
Not water, as before, but human blood.

We thought that we should have our hearts' desire,
However foul it was, because we could;
We, who possessed vast surpluses of food,
Gave niggardly, though others' need was dire;

We raised to power the bully and the liar,
Thought that which was expedient was good
(Things didn't seem so bad from where we stood);
Like well-fed pigs, we wallowed in the mire.

Now Death is eyeing us, an eager buyer.
God promised there would be no second Flood:
The waves are daily rising ever higher.
