South Australian Bonded Medical Scholarship Scheme (SABMSS)

• eligible for SA residents of 10 + years (the years can be collected over a longer time period)
• 5 scholarships available at Flinders and 5 at Uni of Adelaide, commencing 2007 and available for 2008 and 2009 as well, then subject to review by the Minister.
irrespective of the findings of the review, all students are guaranteed support throughout their medical studies provided they pass each year.
• pays all tuition fees (i.e pays all the HECS) but no other scholarship
• bonded to the SA Dept of Health for a period of 4 years in a designated area of need (=outer metro and rural for Flinders students and rural only for Uni of Adelaide students)
• bonded period starts counting from internship year
• can count years of training for a Fellowship (i.e working as a registar) in a non-designated area toward the bonded period as well- provided that the location is essential to your field of specialization.
• students will receive support from the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency, irrespective of where you'd like to work at the completion of the studies
• students are obligated to become a registered Medical Practitioner within 1.5 years of graduating (usually this happens upon graduation)
• if you fail a year, the scholarship is suspended so you can have a chance to repeat (at own expenses however :-( )
• if you breach the contract you have to repay the scholarship amount to the Dept of Health (amount is CPI indexed)
