Rooney Von Werner's Biography
Place of Origin: Schwartzenbruin
Current Home: Schwartzenbruin, but often on the road
History: A singer, a wanderer, an adventurer ...
Rooney was born in CY 575 in the Shore district of Schwartzenbruin and raised
at Solcarde House, the Old Kerk's orphanage in the Old City district. His magnificent
singing voice was noted and developed throughout his formative years, and he
was first tenor in several prestigious ceremonies during his teens. Rooney also
had the opportunity to study a little at the Colleges of Rao, learning something
about a wide smattering of topics.
In mid-592, during his eighteenth year, Rooney was chosen from the crowd to
take part in the Dance of Nerull, escorting a convicted felon to his gruesome
end at the Paleen Rock. While being chosen as a living vessel for the power
of Nerull isn't what some would call good fortune, it worked out well for Rooney,
who soaked up the attention and the adulation provided by the crowd. The experience
set Rooney's feet on the path of a wanderer, and since then he has been travelling
throughout Perrenland and beyond, looking for fame, glory and attention on an
ever-widening stage.
He still considers Schwartzenbruin home, and pays an equal share of the rent
on a house south of Perren's Keep in the New City district that he shares with
two friends from College, Erich Trumann and Anna Eissfeldt. Eric and Anna have
both had a major influence on Rooney's life. They convinced him to join them
as members of the Old Kerk in CY 593, and now Rooney is one of the most famous
(and notorious) living members of the Voice of the Kerk. He answered "the call"
of paladinhood in mid-595, and then sat the entry exams for the rechters early
in CY 596. Even so, he still wanders throughout the Flanaess, going wherever
the wanderlust takes him.
Appearance: Well-dressed and flamboyant - see his pictures.
Animal Companions:
- Aitken the horse
- Ferdinand the donkey
- Reepicheep the rat
- Snowy the parrot
Other Notes: Member of the Silver Gryphons, along with:
- Anselm "Thorn" Thornbriar (the cleric/wizard),
- Arnyn Bandiger (the druid, who disappeared into the wilds of Perrenland
in 595 and hasn't been seen since),
- Geena Smithton (the rogue, who retired in 594 to a happy life of beer-drinking
in her favourite taverns at Schwartzenbruin),
- Heidi Floss (the cleric/sorcerer),
- Lady Cinna (the paladin/marshall) and
- Pelari "Skullcrusher" Odelstacia (the increasingly tattooed monk)
Deeds of Note:
- Working up the crowd for the executions at Schwartzenbruin.
- Much singing of courage-inspiring songs in battle.
- Fascinating many-headed foes with song whenever they rear their ugly heads.
- Saving the Cantonal Council at Schwartzenbruin from a terrible fate at the
cost of his own life.
- Slowly dying in the arms of Geena Smithton, the only other Silver Gryphon
present and the only one of his companions who followed him into danger, as
the rest had lost courage and hope.
- Coming back "Ready to Rumba!", thanks to the Lillends who gave him dance
lessons while in heaven.
- Convincing the Paynim that Pelari, despite being an elf and a woman, would
be suitably "Man-Hearted" to fight an honour duel if she could defeat a man
as manly as himself. It only took one punch on her part; Rooney didn't even
have an opportunity to demonstrate his "not in the face" combat technique.
- Starting a tour of the Flanaess during CY 595 in Kendragund Keep (Perform
check = 44) before having top billing at Das Grünfest in Krestible (Perform
check = 41) and giving a private concert in a mansion in the Foreign Quarter
of Greyhawk City (Perform check = 48).
- Demonstrating his recently-acquired status as a paladin by decapitating
a wicked opponent with one blow of his longsword (critical hit with first
ever smite attack for 37 hit points of damage).
- Freeing the trapped soul of Flavius, a noble dragon, from its skeletal
remains through a combination of inspiring words and one righteous smite.
When Rooney struck the final blow, only Jaspar still stood beside him, and
both were sorely wounded. Of the others, two had fallen to the animated dragon
skeleton and another two had fled in terror.
- Earning the title of Lord Stalwart of Sterich and the friendship of the
noble giant Achim Lachlenssen for his part in shaming the giant Magnussen
into accepting the peaceful surrender of Sterich to the Suhket.
- Captaining "the Lone Warrior" to victory in the annual Schwartzenbruin to
Traft yatch race.
- Persuading one ghostly woman to return to life, and a second to move on
to a better place.
- Assisting the Silverfrond Troupe in their time of need as a replacement
lead singer, including some stunning performances for Lady Haleena Weisspeer
(Perform check = 44 for the soiree, Perform check = 45 for the grand ball).
- Studying with the master dancer of the Silverfrond Troupe, Michal Yutiov,
and learning an ancient Fruztii wardance.
- Receiving silver spurs from the Voormann for various deeds of note in 596
CY, most of which involved encouraging Halfrek to kill evil monsters at the
right time and in the right way.
- Being honoured by the new Voormann for his services to the nation with the
title of Landgraf in 598 CY.

Favourite Adventures:
- Roodbergs Be Damned - Arnyn the dire pidgeon, and a villain who
would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for us meddling kids travelling
around Perrenland accompanied by Winter, the mystery-solving wolf
- By Cunning and Forced Cause - pleasingly complex, and despite
missing the critical clue we still almost managed to defeat the Big Bad by
using good tactics
- Experimentation - a fitting title for the adventure in more ways
than one
- Nine Lives - we saved a cat, a parrot, and two hedgehogs
... and we almost saved a carrion crawler, too, just in case it was a cat
in disguise
- Atonement - good plot, good characters, good problem-solving opportunities
... easily the best-written Living Greyhawk Core adventure I've played
- Dark Clouds Over Istivin - great story and characters, with a
real sense of the adventure being a small portion of a much bigger narrative,
plus talking to your opponents actually accomplished something ... best Living
Greyhawk adventure ever, even better than Atonement
- A Story for Another Day - another good scenario by the author
of Atonement that assumes the characters will talk with most people and creatures
they encounter, plus I never expected to see one of those in a Living
Greyhawk scenario.
- On With the Show - tremendous fun! Lots of scope for character
interaction, an urban setting, challenges tailored for a socially-adept character
- plus a great DM! All up, eight hours of special mission enjoyment.
- Drowning By Numbers - an adventure where Our Heroes have theme
music!
