Wintersun 2010

What is Wintersun?

To answer a question a few new dancers have posed, and to let them know what they've been missing, we put up a bit about the Festival which attracts between 90,000 and 130,000 enthusiastic dancers and car enthusiasts every year. The festival has been running for over 20 years and has built into one of the biggest nostalgia events in the world....and it's right here in OZ. Click here to go to their website for more details Wintersun.

"Australia's Leading Rock & Roll Nostalgia Retro Event....  Wintersun is Australia's leading annual Retro Nostalgia Festival. Featuring almost 1500 Hot Rods, Custom and Classic Cars, more than 100 bands and performers, dancing, movies, and competitions. The festival is held in the border coastal towns of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads on the New South Wales & Queensland border. Many events are free, some are in the streets while others are in the local clubs and shopping centres".

June 10 Thursday

Rolled into Cooly round lunchtime. The place was already really rockin'. Lots of street music and dancing. Plenty of cars already in for the weekend parade. Live music back in Showcase. Many went off to the afternoon dance at Kirra, but we crashed after flying all night. May hit Dolphins or Twin Towns later tonight.

Huge WA contingent here, so should be a good breakfast @ Outback Jacks tomorrow.

Friday 11

Breakfast @ Wintersun 2010

Great turnout for the second Perth Rocks breakfast @ Wintersun - about 80 diners. Food was good and lots of good company. Chance to make new friends and strengthen old relationships.

Good interstate turn-out from Gladstone rockers, a few from the Gold Coast, Canberra and New Zealand.

The markets were great as usual - time for lots of shopping after breakfast. Have a suitcase full of new stockings (that's Celia, not Josef), new blocks for dancing and had to hit the new cup-cake stall.

Bought one of their devil's food and peanut butter rock'n'roll cupcakes and had to get Maria an Elvis cupcake! Stall was really authentic and the cup-cakes were awesome - made from real ingredients - not 21st century package cake-mix!

At night - dancing at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre with:

The Rocking' Bodgies, The River City Rumblers (see video clip on the right), The Shuffle Boys and Harry DeLuxe and the Rechords (with Felix Potier)

Saturday 12

Some family stuff first, then a stroll down Marine Parade with huge number of people, cars and bands.

Had a great dance (on rough bitumen) with the Melbourne band Ignition, see video clip on the right.

Hail Hail Rock'n'Roll @ Twin Towns Showroom
with Bobby Brooks Hamilton, Dean Z and Lance Lipinsky, a great show.

Sun 13 June

dancing on bitumen, lots of stuff happening,

Great 1950s Cake Bake-Off
Ladies (and one gent) in 1950s outfits had to present their 50s creations for the competition. The short clip on the right shows some of the contestants, including
Mimsy ex Mimsy's Trailer Trash Tattoos.
The sound track by Harry DeLuxe backed by The Rechords, a Melbourne rockabilly band with Felix Potier on lead guitar.

Mon 14 June

The Best of Wintersun Concert
over six hours of non-stop entertainment, including the best Elvis around - Dean Z, Bobby Brooks-Hamilton (Little Richard), Bill Haley and His Comments at their entertaining best, with Wanda Jackson (backed by Itchy Fingers) closing the show.

Tonnes of footage, but too little time with all the dancing on the grass and having a good time generally.
Hopefully, a Best of Wintersun video clip to come, after we catch up on some sleep.
