WA Rock'n'Roll & Rockabilly Bands, Musos and DJs
The local bands are in a continuous state of flux - the musicians frequently change, the bands form, re-form and de-form, so take this information as possibly correct at the time of the last update. The bands listed play predominantly the 50's and 60's rock'n'roll, rockabilly, country rock and swing. Some bands are no longer playing, but are still listed for historical reference, others may be largely playing outside Australia, but have their roots here.

Adam Hall and The Velvet Playboys
|
The music captures a mood reminiscent of the Rat Pack or Louis Prima in Las Vegas in the 50s - smooth swingin' jazz, rockin' blues and good ol' boogie woogie. Their repertoire also features more contemporary music in a vein similar to artists as diverse as James Brown, Ray Charles & Harry Connick Jr.

The Rough Housers
|
Formed over nine beers and a mutual love of all things rockabilly; country licks, standing up, thumping bass, slapback vocals and songs about cars and girls, the three chaps who form the powerhouse backbone of erstwhile Perth pop rock band Murphy's Lore decided that their time was NOW. Rockabilly music, if it needs to be pigeonholed (and it really doesn't, however), is a country and rock and roll crossover that defined the late 50's and brought stardom to Elvis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash amongst many others. While the Stray Cats and other noted revival artists have added a distinctly punk ethos to the rockabilly epithet, no one can deny the raw energy and pure fun delivered by swingin' rockabilly tunes. Kieran "Bernie" Murphy, the drummer and previously silent 'other' Murphy brother took the mic because no-one else would and much to his surprise, it wasn't awful. Some people even went so far as to say it was "good". Picking up on the energy of Andy Sturmer and Slim Jim Phantom, Kieran decided that playing, singing and standing up could all be achieved simultaneously. His favourite rockabilly tune is 40 Days by Ronnie Hawkins. |
Shaun "42nd" Street had spent some considerable time on the electrified bass, before receiving his degree and graduating to its taller cousin, the upright double bass and began making one hell of a racket. His favourite track is Lonnie Donegan's immortal version of the old classic Rock Island Line. Jason Jay Eddy Smith came armed with a Gretsch White Falcon, a 1957 National lap steel, a background in pure country twang and a whole mess of attitude. Taking lead vocals on a couple of tunes from his idols, Johnny Cash and Junior Brown, Jase is the virtuoso that every boy wants to be, and the guitar hero every girl wants to get close to. Sorry ladies, he's taken.

The combined talents of Boogie-woogie pianist Peter Stone (ex-Busher's
Lone Rangers) and ace blues guitarist Mark Gordon (Rick Steel's Hot
Biscuit band) has helped to make the Roadmasters a real favourite with
fans of 50's R&B, rock n roll and rockin' blues. The boys share lead
vocals, and are backed by a swingin rhythm section - this is a band that
really knows how to rock it up, and keep you on that dance floor! Buckle
up, for some "automotive blues"!
