The Yeomen - profile of a Perth Sixties Band

Starting out as a teenage cover band called The Rejects in mid 1965,

The Yeomen obtained a tryout at "The Broadway Stomp" Nedlands in July of that year. The Broadway was the biggest teenage dance of its type in Perth at that time and the promoter was impressed enough to give the Group a regular spot at the Broadway each Saturday night ... with a name change from The Rejects being conditional.

The Yeomen became a constant at The Broadway, playing there every Saturday night for almost two years until the Group disbanded and the Stomp eventually closed mid 1967. On alternate Saturday nights Peter & the Drifters and Johnny & The Strangers (later & Kompany) were the other two regular Bands. Various other Perth groups played the Broadway on and off including The Spektors -The Valentines (Bon Scott), The Statesmen, The Times, Ray Hoff & Offbeats, Russ & the Little Wheels, Triffids and Mark IV.

The Yeomen also shared the bill with interstate acts such as Ronnie Burns, Lynne Randell, Billy Adams, Denise Drysdale, Steve & the Board, Tony Barber, MPD Limited, The (Melbourne) Strangers, Olivia Newton John ... and were the backing band for some of these performers.

Friday nights during Summer, The Yeomen were also regulars at the "Swanbourne Stomp" as well as frequent year round performers at the "Canterbury Court Ballroom" and at Special Events at the "Pagoda Ballroom". A highlight for the Band was as support for The Easybeats at the Pagoda in 1966. That year also marked The Yeomen's Television debut on the locally produced "Club Seventeen" aired on TVW Channel Seven. A number of appearances on that show followed and helped lift the profile of the Group.

After going their separate ways in 1967 the members of The Yeomen linked up again after many years in the 1990's to eventually perform a Charity re-union gig in 1999 back at the original site of The Broadway Stomp.

Since then the Band has continued playing regularly, with three founding members, Fred Maynard, Rudy Zuidwind and Terry Harris forming the core of the Group. They perform the same material they did forty years ago ...  along with some new additions to their repertoire.

The Yeomen - for 50's & 60's Rock'n'Roll - the way it used to be.
