D20 Fantasy assumes that the characters to be played are the exceptional individuals of the world. They are the adventurers, the heroes of their lands, and the champions of causes. But sometimes, there are exceptional people who do not adventure. Sometimes, heroes can be found in ordinary folk, the people who work for a living or even those with lives of luxury, who choose to take up the call when fate or fortune calls.
Fantasy is filled with stories of the ordinary villager caught in the grip of cataclysmic events. Unlikely Heroes makes that ordinary person a viable starting class for any game.
All the standard NPC classes get an overhaul, with some re-interpretations. The Unlikely Heroes classes are not focused upon conflict the way that adventurer classes are, but have interesting abilities with possible applications in times of trouble. You could use this to give an option to players who want a bit more normal history for their characters at 1st level, or as an upgrade for those exceptional NPCs out there who are short-changed by the normal NPC classes. It is also possible to use these classes as full replacements for the standards, if your world gives the same value to the normal folk as adventurers.
