Paul Hegerty
ARTIST PROFILE AND EXHIBITION HISTORY

Artist, Paul Hegerty,
...painting in my studio...

I am a philosophical artist, using paint to explore human existence. This is no surprise. I have spent my adult life involved in communities and organisations and how they deal with life and issues. I find that images and visual communication are an important part of this work.

The context of human experience has layers of meaning and tension such as life and death, private and public, and joy and sorrow. I look for ways to express these themes visually. As an artist I spend hours contemplating the subject and finding ways to express it on canvas. I often spend large amounts of time sitting and staring at the canvas. I let my non-rational self relate with the emerging image. As I create the painting it recreates my point of view. Viewers can also explore the image, construct their own meaning from it and engage in a dialogue around the subject. For this reason I avoid using repugnant media even if I am dealing with a confronting subject. I don’t want to repel viewers or shock them. I want them to join with me and explore the image and its meaning.

My work is fusion and eclectic in genre. It incorporates representational and abstract, classical and modern, and whatever I think will do the job. Currently I work with synthetic polymer paints, choosing pigments and media that are non-toxic. The range of modern, colourfast pigments creates excellent possibilities. This is not just for my own workplace health and safety but also for my children who like to hang around my painting gear. Using synthetic polymer has challenged me to develop a balance between my contemplative approach and the decisiveness required by this medium. Painting in a hot, subtropical climate means that some days the paint dries as it comes off the brush.

My work can now be found in private collections in Australia and overseas.
