Gold Cadillac. 1990 to 1996
by G .J. Lunn.

Between 1990 and 1996, I had the pleasure of working with Gold Cadillac for the above period before moving on to other challenges within the music industry.

This is their story:

Gold Cadillac already had a vast reputation on the rock 'n' roll circuit before I joined them as the FOH Engineer in 1990 after returning from a stint at NRTV Northern Rivers, ( Coffs Harbour). In 1989.
Over that period we saw many changes to the line-up. The core members were Fred Assmanass and Phil Jones of "Benny and the Jets" fame.
The first line up at my early stages of touring with band .
Fred Assmanass , lead guitar and vocals.
Phil Jones , rhythm guitar and vocals.
Greg Kinsela , bass and vocals.
Peter Harrison , drums

Enter Justin Roberts on bass and vocals, George Georgeff , drums and vocal.
The bands permanent road crew from that time were.
Greg Lunn. Foh Engineer.
Tony (the GAFFA) Smith. Lighting Troog.
Peter (Bluey) Hoppe. Monitor Engineer
Jimmy Frost. Stage and bits.
The band was a self-contained unit, touring with up to eight tons of equipment.
In 1993 the band celebrated its 15th anniversary year with the release of a self titled album which was recorded at the Skyhigh Studios in Jesmond, produced by the band and engineered by Greg Lunn and David Henderson over ten days in that same year.
A tour of the east coast of Australia, was undertaken to promote the album, by this time George had moved on and Peter Harrison was back on the skins.

There where many tours during this time, some of my favorites were the weeklong stopovers, such as Lighting Ridge where the locals looked after us, which was the case of many a place we toured.
It wasn't unusual to be still sitting in a bar at many of the venues we played until the sun came up and didn't that take its toll.
Kempsey RSL was another place where we were accepted as locals, often dinning at the Club Presidents place until all hours of the morning. Looked after with style at varies motels and venues in which we stayed and where always greeted with great attention, the venues where always packed with punters, it was great fun!
The band won best Variety Act and the Readers Choice Award in 1991 and 1993 in The Newcastle Star Commonwealth Music Awards.
Tony Smith and Myself, managed to win Best Sound and Lighting Award in 1993.
The band often shared the stage with greats such as Chubby Checker, The Deltones, and Jefferson Airplane.
There was one occasion on the Chubby Checker Tour were the band received such a tremendous applause that Chubby Checker was threatened by the crowds reaction and he Chubby was unnerved and edgy about performing after Gold Cadillac, hence that was the end of our run with Chubby, but it was a great sensation to blow the main act of the stage.
The band didn't always travel by road is those days; it wasn't uncommon to see the band charter a plane to get the gigs when the occasion arrived. With the production hours ahead of the band.
Sound checks for the band where rare thing, as the crew had the show wired to there liking, its was a pretty smooth operation in those days, maybe that why the show worked so well.

The players themselves all had record release with other outfits before teaming up to make the Gold Cadillac of this period.

Justin Roberts.

1996. The times had changed and I moved on to take up other interest with the music industry. Bluey Hoppe took over the FOH engineering role for a short time. Fed Assmanass retired from the music scene, Justin Robert also retired and moved into the sporting industry, Phil Jones and Peter Harrison still keep the band alive today.
Other production crew members where: Jeff Lewis, John Pomfrett and Trevor Parkinson.
Since that time the band has changed in many different aspects. With new line-ups, new road crew and a different direction, but my time with the band was an enjoyable one in which I have made life long friends. In my opinion this was when Gold Cadillac were at their peak.
.
Keep it up boys they were great times.

Gold Cadillac: In Armed Robbery.
By Greg Lunn.

Bersefield Bowling Club: 1994

The band Gold Cadillac had been engaged to perform a charity concert on the behalf of the community group. V.O.C.A.L., which stands for, The Victims of Crime.
The auditorium was at full capacity for the above event, which went of without too many hitches as usual. The boys play 4 sets of great rock 'n' roll as they usual do, filling the dance floor at every song they performed, songs that jog the memories of the punters.
After the pack up and load out, the band stayed back for staffies as per usual. I myself wasn't really up to the after gig drinks that night. But was hassled enough to go and enjoy the after gig affair.
There where about fifteen or so people still at the club, WHEN all of sudden the venue became alive with sounds of orders coming from all directions of the club.
To our surprise the venue was covered with six to eight men dresses in overalls, armed with pistols and shotguns. Hit the floor the voices sounded out in a loud and commanding order.
At first we all thought it was a joke, a joke it wasn't, these guys meant business we hit the floor. But too our surprise Freddie had to start to be a smart ass without out bursts of abuse towards the gunman who job its was to maintain us in the so called position, while other members of the gang order the duty manger to open the safe which was located in another section of the club.
As this was being undertaken, Fred kept abusing the gang member that had his pistol pointed at those who lay on the floor. (You'll never get away with it mate, your only a baby give up with you can) etc etc it went on and on.
As we all lay on the floor face down and trying to tell Freddie to shut the fuck up, he lay on his side and continued to drink his beer.
Next we where all required to stand, place our arms on our heads and march in single file towards the area were the safe was located, we all complied, I myself didn't put my head down as required, the sight and feel of a pistol placed on your forehead was not a very pleasant experience.
One by one we where filed into the safe, fifteen people lock in a safe wasn't my idea of a good time, then everyone that smoked light-up to control there nerves I presume. That wasn't such a good idea, small area and not much ventilation.
Neil the duty manager was a real mess; he hadn't been able to open the safe for the gang at first, which in turn had his life being threatened.
Within time after the security alarms where trigger, the police and other appropriate officials arrived and released us from our confined space.
It didn't finish there back to Maitland police station were statements where taken, as I believe today the cops did evenuatley catch up with so-called arm gang.
I think the amount they stole was around the $10 - $12,000,00 worth.
It was a memorable gig.
