Kicks: Gavin, Clayton, Rod, Mark

Kicks at Silver Dollar, Fortitude Valley Formed by ex-Young Identities players, these guys played a brand of guitar based music that really rocked.

They certainly looked the part, with their leather pants and snake skin cuban heel boots!

It was pretty hard for them to play in some venues. It only took a little effort to hire a local hall for a night.

The sound was a bit Bauhaus inspired. The band wasn't cool enough for some. (Must've been the early Adam and The Ants influences?)

Kicks were able to finance a number of self-produced recordings on vinyl and cassette tape. I enjoyed the early song: (You always wear) Leather.

Unfortunately success eluded yet another excellent combination of talents.

Rod went on to be in the infamous Pineapples From The Dawn of Time band that has continued until this modern era.

Gigs

Early Young Identities practices upstairs at Griffith University Refectory were a hoot. The Pits also used the space afterwards for their early practices.

The photo above shows Rod from a gig at The Silver Dollar, Fortitude Valley, in 1980.

Kicks played at a number of popular events. One of the more memorable was a Campaign Against Nuclear Power Dance at the Baroona Hall, Caxton St, Paddington. Other scheduled acts that night were This 5 Minutes, Les Bon Bons, and The Pits. The Black Assassins made an inproptu stage invasion at the end of the night. Then the Queensland Police arrived.....

Another cool performance was at Camp Hill School of Arts. Interesting use of a smoke machine and a torchlight!
