Pumpkins in the back garden, August 1998

Dave in the Main Garden For several years my greatest hobby (apart from computing and music making) has been organic vegetable gardening in my small inner-city back yard.

The climate in Brisbane, Australia is frost-free temperate/sub-tropical, so a wide variety of crops can be grown. It's too hot and humid for some things though.

The worst thing I have to worry about is too much shade from surrounding structures and trees.

In recent times water restrictions have also severely affected productivity.

I prefer a "No Dig" method, which involves covering a spot with a good layer of old newspapers, then covering these with a thick layer of straw and compost. After some weeks, the grass underneath is dead, and the garden is ready for planting!

I also try to use the moon phases to assist my planting and harvesting. An astrological calendar with a helpful moon planting guide can often be obtained from a hippy shop.

Basically, the theory is you plant leafy vegetables when the moon is waxing, and root vegetables when the moon is waning. Harvest on a waning moon.
